We went the wrong way, went through 2 trucks before we got our right one. Dodge deamon 2020, won’t tow or 5th wheel at all. Then Traded to 2020 Chevy 2500 HD Diesel, 382 MBQ put us over on GVWR, so traded it to GMC Denale, Diesel, dully and a great ride from dealer in Utah to vegas.

Hope you didn't lose too much on all the trading. The usual rule of thumb is to settle on the RV =first= then find the truck to =carry= it, at least when dealing with fifth wheels. If you can't afford the truck you need to =carry= the FW you want, then you either have to lower your sights on a cheaper truck or a smaller (or cheaper, i.e. used) FW. Lyle

Get a 1 ton dully and tow about any 5W, few RV it will not carry.

Did a lot of research on this too. Ford or Ram are pretty close. We went with the F350 because they now use the Allison transmission. Ram talked about it but did not move this year. Great truck with tone of Torque. I would go diesel with the heavy of a load. Also look at maximizing the payload. It is often forgotten.

We did a bad thing when we well, got the truck first, after 2, we got a 2021 GMC Denali, Diesel dully GVWR 14000. GCWR 40000. 382MBQ and it pulls with no problems at all.

We went the other way and are very happy with both. 2020 GMC 4x4 1 ton Denali long bead with Diesel and dully. Nice ride and the 2021 382 MBQ. I would like to know how you like your 382 so far....how you like towing it....how easy is it to park, etc if you wouldn't mind, and whatever you decide you don't like about it. This is the trailer we want...but I'm panicking about the size and the price tag. We are kind of biding our time, waiting for the mad rush to be over, and thinking maybe someone who bought during this crazy mad rush might decide they don't want it after all. We have a 34'6" bumper pull right now, and hubby says the 382 won't be any harder to park than this bumper pull. thx!

While I don't have a 382, its floor length will be about what your bumper pull's length is. So your towing footprint will be about the same as you are now, as far as length, but will be taller also. It will tow easier as far as ride and turning, but I imagine it is going to be quite a bit heavier also. One downside to something that size with the patio extended, you will have far less campsites you can fit in. The 382 looks like it might be 50' when opened up. We looked at 40-42' rvs when we went looking last year, but after we also looked at where we want to camp and boondock at, we settled on a 34.5' rv. We also have just the 2 of us and 2 small dogs. Do what works for you, a compromise or two may be in order.
I agree with you waiting to buy, I think you will see quite a few rvs entering the used market in a few months, as people unload them because they really can't afford them, or just didn't use them like they hoped.

I agree with roaming315, size matters if you are going to stay in National or State parks, some have restrictions on the size of a unit, other may only have a few spots that can fit larger trailers in ... As well some KOA an Good Sam Camp grounds won't take large rigs, we have only found a very few Good Sam an no KOA's but they are out
there ...
What we do most often is find a nice Camp Ground outside the Parks an take day trips into the parks, National an State parks may be cheaper but sometimes the hassle of squeezing into a narrow spot just isn't worth it along with the DW screaming you going to hit something .... Or after getting backed in that tight spot that took you
30 minutes jacking the trailer around hearing her say I really don't like this spot can we move to another Also since the Covid19 has left many people out of work the younger generation that has bought TT or 5th wheels may be looking at selling or turning them back to the bank because they can't afford such ... I'm really supersized that I have not seen more on the market than I have ... But saying the above I have been by the Army/Air Force Base 50 miles north of us in the last month, were I use to
see maybe 20 or 30 TT an 5th wheels in their fenced in holding lots now see well over a 100 or more ... Where they use to have only one small lot for storage they now have two very large lots filled to the brim, so I
know who is buying TT an 5th wheels ...
If the same is happening in other parts of the country from Military personnel they are keeping the RV industry alive
an well that's for sure ..

Gang, thanks for the responses. My travel trailer is 13.17 exterior height, so we're accustomed to the height. I understand the 382 will probably be slightly taller, though and we're good for that. Chuck, we've discussed at length about finding campgrounds outside the parks, and taking day trips just as you were talking about. We're also well aware the weight will be quite a bit more, that's the purpose of buying the dually. Not worried about that either. Your responses have gone a long way to help me in my fact finding, and I'm grateful! Thank you!!

chulavista You also stated you were sort of worried about turning an backing, a 5th wheel will turn a little different than a TT, this is because your pevit point in the bed of the truck an not on the rear bumper ... Thus going down the road an turning around corners a 5th wheel will turn a bit sharper an thus make it easier to back unto camp sites ... The ride will be much easier as well because you have the pin weight in the bed of the truck an not way behind on the bumper ... As well you will not get the sway you get when a semi passes you going down the road ... But with the being taller somewhat you will see a but an I say bit more wind side load in really strong winds, but with any trailer the stronger the wind the slower you go anyway ...
You May already do such, just me thinking LOL Also when your looking at a camp site they will ask you the length of the rig or how long a camp site you want, in some case's you could say one thing an in other you could say something else ... What I mean here is if you rig is 40ft long an your patio is say 10ft long you need a 50ft space for the rig an another possibly 10ft for your truck unless they have parking place's for your tow vehicle, thus now your looking at 60ft overall ... Maybe less if you can park your truck sideways in front of your RV ... The other way is that if you know that your going to back into a space that has a tree in an grass behind the camp site then you can say that your camp site needs to be 40ft or 50ft an put your patio in the grass behind your rig ... But saying this you have to be careful, some RV camp grounds a really bad about anything being on the grass ... We have stayed at one camp ground were they stated no slides over the grass, well the site was all of maybe 12ft wide an there was no way with slides open you could do such ... Another RV Park we were in was really nice, paved sites that were very wide, nice paved patios but don't put the wheel of your truck anywhere near the grass or they would ask you to leave, thus you parked in a parking spot that was 20 yards away ... Some camp grounds we have stayed in have 70ft an even two we have been in have been 80ft long, other you just fit in, one camp ground we ask for a 50ft site stated our trailer was 40ft long, they gave us a 40ft site that was square to the narrow road that even after 40 years of backing semi's in I could not have back our rig into ... DW called office an said no way, they moved us to a 60ft site that we should have gotten in the 1st place an was very easy to back into ... Safe Travels Chuck

Chuck, I smiled when I read your post. We went from a fifth wheel to the bumper pull, and the bumper pull is tall. Hubby said it's like pulling a giant wind sail some times. Our original fifth wheel was 34', travel trailer is 34'5". We pulled them both with a ford f250 powerstroke diesel. The travel trailer was much, much harder to pull and park. Now going to a 40'4" fifth wheel, with a truck that's much more capable and it has a tighter turning radius than our old f250. I'm looking forward to the new adventure. As for camp site info, thank you very much. This is all things we will keep in mind.

Well I can tell you that the 5th wheel will turn easier but the dually will take a country mile to turn around as well no more pulling though the bank drive though or some but not all fast food places if you go to such
Our G384RLT pulls better than our old Coachman Chappy 5th wheel which was only 33ft an way lighter ... If he thinks a 34ft TT is a big sail ask him what he would think of pulling a 53ft,- 13.6 high trailer almost empty in 20mph side wind is like Ugh !!!
Again I'm sure you know most of what I am saying below since you already have been camping for some time
The other thing we have found out in the last few years is that RV parks are filling up with full timers that find it way cheaper to live in a RV park than buy a house or construction workers who move around allot .. One KOA in Oregon on I-84 we stayed at had 60 sites, 45 of them had full timers in them an only 15 sites were for visitors or over night travelers ... Another Good Sam RV park on Idaho, had over 100 sites, very large park, over 90 percent of the park was full timers ... The only time we didn't see such was out in the middle of states away form the larger cities, so if we were going to stay close to a large city we always call way ahead, we also if getting close to a week end would call ahead sometimes 4 or 5 days in advance to get a camp site ...
Of course during the summer we always called a few days to a week ahead when traveling across country, but after the kids went back to school except for weekends we only call a day ahead most times ...

Hi Chuck, We've been camping forever, but I think we've actually paid for a camp spot maybe once or twice. We always boondock. Started in a little pop up tent trailer, moved to a cab over camper, then to the travel trailers. We never pay for camp sites unless we have no other options. HOWEVER, I know this will change when we start exploring places we've never been before. You don't typically find boondocking sites advertised for obvious reasons. LOL! I smiled again...you said the dually will take a country mile to turn it around - our '99 doesn't turn as sharp as our new dually does. Hubby and I had this conversation over and over again...I wanted a f450 vs the f350 we bought for that reason. I lost that battle. BUT, our 350 is much easier to maneuver than our '99 250 ever was

HA!! Too funny!!! Actually, been camping with my family since almost the day I was born. I think I remember my mom telling me I was about 6 weeks old when I went on my first camping trip. She put me between her and my dad in the tent, my two older sisters slept at our feet. I thought we had really 'come uptown' when we got a small shell camper for the bed of the truck, because we also got to sleep in it on a foam mattress. We thought we were in paradise by then! LOL!!
