Taking my first long trip south next week to mrtle beach, but it looks like i may be getting a later start than original expected, i want to travel at least half way beforre calling it a night , but with my later than expected departure, this should take me well into the night, so instead of trying to find a open campground, figured i try sleeping in a flying J ot similar truckstop, basically to get a quick nap and avoid getting too side tracked at night finding other sleeping quarters, first time trying this in my spree escape,, just looking for sound advice , from those who frequently use such places?

I have taken a few hour nap before at a rest stop. I would not do it at a truck stop. Truck stops especially in the south will most likely be full when you get there and if not are designed for drivers that have to sleep. Be off duty by law. They are working. Not on vacation. In the past when on vacation I drive till 5 or 6 pm and just get an inexpensive campsite near the highway. Usually a 20.00 site. Don't even unhook. Just plug in and turn the air on. I would recommend this if you can. I don't usually plan but either look at my phone app or watch for campground sign.
When we go to myrtle beach from Wisconsin we usually make it to Tennessee the first day and then just a nice drive the second day to the park. Lots of cg near the highway in Tennessee .

I use to drive tractor trailers years ago and as Andy said, it may be difficult to find a spot at a truck stop at night when you are looking to stop. If you don't want to stop at a campground near the highway you may be able to find a Walmart close to the highway that allows overnight parking just to catch a few ZZZ's?

I just don't want to be wondering around in the dark looking for a open campground in the middle of the night, I hear most campgrounds close at dusk , no exceptions, there is a walmart in Winston salem off I 77 that is open 24 hours that I do believe will allow overnighters, may try calling to confirm. if this is where I wind up, I will be arriving around midnight, crash until roughly 6-7am then back on the road, of course I will stock up on some needed grocerys, get some breakfast, and thank them.

Found a walmart in the winston salem area that allows overnight parking. Just wondering if anybody knows how safe the 27105 area is. ?

In 30 years of traveling with a M/H towing an enclosed car trailer (30') we have stayed, to get a quick nap, at truck stops, parking lots, and truck stops. They are correct, late at night truck stops can be crowded. good luck and enjoy the beach.

We stay at walmarts and sams clubs fairly often. Park out of the way is all.
Cabela's allows overnight as well.
