Hi!
We just returned from our trip. We stopped at Kalyumet campground in Cook Forest, PA. It was a muddy mess. Huge ruts everywhere and they just seemed to be filling them with gravel. Had trouble leveling because of the soft ground. The RV kept sinking at points when I put the weight down, I think I ended up using every board that I carry just to make level platforms for my landing gear. I think this place would be nice if the ground was solid. There is a lot to do in the area if you like hiking, canoeing, horse back riding or outdoorsy stuff. Not much in the area for eating or shopping.
The Watkins Glen Corning KOA (Watkins Glen, NY) was nice. We were back in the "big rig" section. They put in really nice patios and fire pits within the last year. While most of my site was level, my truck ended going up-hill at a good angle from the camper when un-hooking. Didn't have any trouble hooking back up when leaving. Lots of stuff for kids to do at this campground. It is a pretty big place and a golf cart would've been nice for getting around. The pool was cloudy and kids were running rampant in the spa area. The cost per night was $80, which is very steep compared to most campgrounds. If you like wineries, this place is for you. We were bored within a few days, as there's not much else to do in the area. Went hiking on the trail in Watkins Glen gorge, which was beautiful! The Corning Museum of Glass was a little disappointing to us and we were advised to stay away from the Rockwell (not Norman) museum of western art. Our neighbor at the KOA was talking about pulling out 5 days early because they were bored stiff as well. Even though the site was nice, I don't see us going back here again. I'll bet this area is hopping during race week in August.
Last stop at Old Mill Stream Campground in Lancaster, PA. Getting in was tough as they are doing some construction in the parking lot. Looks like they are trying to change the parking area for the amusement park from mostly free to all paid. I couldn't tell what their final plan was, but I hope it's RV friendly. I was hitting the curbs trying to get through the modified route. The campground is a little dated, there's not much to do except for the amusement park (which is probably the point). I did enjoy sitting outside and listening to the sound of the roller coaster running, but that is mostly a nostalgic thing I think. The traffic in the area is much heavier than I remember it being before. I used to be able to hit the farm roads and not see very much traffic, but that wasn't the case this time. Either way, we love the area and liked staying at Old Mill Stream better than where we normally stay at Starlite, which is a good bit north from there. There were rigs of all shapes and sizes in the park so no matter what you bring, they can accommodate you. I'd say we'll be back to this one for sure. Tracey let me go to Red Robin twice! LOL Check your maps for bypasses when the traffic on the main routes is very heavy. Might be why traffic on the farm roads has increased so much!
