Started from Denver, drove to KC, to gain a son-in-law. Then north to s. Dakota, then west. We are currently in Missoula MT. We had snow in mt Rushmore, monsoon rain, and side winds that were so strong, they kept blowing out the side steps. I ended up locking them in with vice grips. But today was picture perfect. Sunny, 70's, decent tailwind (that really helps the fuel mileage). But the Sporttrek is handling all nicely. Only a couple small issues to resolve when we get home. The electric element in the water heater, only heats to Luke warm at best, so we just use the gas side. And the panel display for the black tank always reads full, even after it has been dumped and flushed. We are having a great time, and am looking forward to the next couple of weeks. al in colorado

Sounds like a great trip despite the weather. It brought back memories of our 1978 trip to BC from Western NY. We had hail at Mt. Rushmore and 99 degree weather at 6:00pm in Missoula. The only campground we could find in Missoula was, I believe, a public campground that was also home to the circus that came into town. Our first site was next to the elephant site....we moved to a black top site, against a chainlink fence and watched the acrobat team practice for the performance the next day. Of course, the blacktop made the temperature even worse and no AC in the truck camper back then. As I write this it sounds like I made this up....it is true. Quite the experience....an oh, such great memories. It was a wonderful 3 week trip.
I don't know about other RVers but our black water tank always reads full. We tried many of the suggested tricks and products, if they worked it was short lived. Our grey does the same thing. Bottomline for us, learn to guesstimate the need to dump. Our grey water fills up faster so we dump both when the grey needs it. Our black tank is quite large we have never had a problem when dry camping for 5 days or so.
Hope the rest of the trip goes well.

I'll be leaving Missoula in the morning. Beautiful day wasn't it? I stayed at the square dance place on route 12 west of Lolo.

Sounds like a nice trip! I agree with bluegrass, tank level indicators are always messed up.
A weight sensor could be a neat idea. If there was some way to gauge the weight of the tank at any given time, it might be relatively accurate. A tank weighs X empty, and holds 50 gallons. Estimate each gallon weighing 8.34 pounds. The tank would be half full when it weighs X + 208 pounds and totally full when it weighs X + 417 pounds.
I'm not sure about blank tank gallon weight, but I'm sure it's calculable.

Regarding your black tank readout, I drain the black tank then I run the tank flush for about 45 minutes then I use RV Hydro Flush to clean it really good, I run it till the water starts to come out again as if I am draining it, shut off the water and let it drain completely and I will run it again and flush. sounds like toilet paper is clogging the sensor. try it, it may help. www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/rv-hydro-flush-45-degree/14496
