we towed our KZ 19' Sportsman Classic dry weight of 2740# with a 2006 Toyota Sienna Van that has a tow pkg and can tow up to 3500#. The engine is 3.3L,V6,215HP. With hitch apparatus of 100# and approx. 150# of additional weight in the trailer cargo are we safe in pulling this even over mountain roads?

is that the true dry weight of the trailer from the sticker on the side of it? I cant see how you can only put 150 lbs in it? the battery and propane adds up to that. I'm not sure I would pull that with the sienna. do you have a good wdh?

We tried pulling a spree escape e196s with a toyata rav4. Did well with our tent trailer but not so good with the larger trailer. Got ourselves a half ton crew cab pickup and there is a world of difference.

Correct. So adding the weight of the propane tank and battery and 150# of cargo and hitch to the dry weight of 2740#we are likely 3100 # or more. What reliable vehicle offers good cargo capacity and can pull 4000# or more?

A 1/2 ton pickup or suv is best for this weight. Most of these tow vehicles are rated for about 9000 pounds gross but realistically can only pull 6000 pounds. There are a number of weight excel worksheets in other forums so that you can calculate what your current setup is. RV.net is one of them. This worksheet came from PopUp Exploere at www.popupexplorer.com - I are not the original author and all thanks should go to them.

as said above, a 1/2 ton pickup or an suv with 100" wheel base or more would be a good vehicle. my brother has a similar length and weight trailer and tows with a 2014 grand Cherokee and it does really well.

Your (jgroff, cooperrobt) thoughts and recommendations are all much appreciated and thank you for taking the time to respond. Our Sienna has ample cargo capacity but we may have to give some of that up for a more reliable tow vehicle. In addition to a pickup truck would a Durango or even a Traverse be a type of SUV that could provide sufficient towing ? I hadn't thought of the Grand Cherokee.

We have the Spree Escape 202 at just over 3000# dry. We tow with an '05 Gr. Cherokee with the 5.7v8 and tow package. Tows great, but you give up a lot of cargo space compared to a van or pickup. Also 10-11mpg is about the best you can hope for. I don't think I'd want to tow with much less. Next upgrade will probably be a crew cab pickup just so you can throw in bikes, grills, firewood etc.

I have an 08 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins with a programmer, towing a 30TH Sportsmen TH. Tows great! Found out during our trip to bike week couple of weeks ago that cruise control reacts quicker to hills than I do . Just sit back and steer.

We towed our 14RB from FL to KY last year. Tow vehicle was an 07 Chrysler Town & Country (V6). It handled the mountains satisfactorily, but you could tell it really wasn't the correct tow vehicle. Main mistake was to drive in "D" instead of "3". Towards the end of each leg, you could tell the van was getting tired. Suspension in van rear wasn't adequate either. Max speed on overpasses was 65mph, floored!
Now we will be making the same trip next week but pulling it with an 05 Tacoma with a 6800lb tow capacity. What a difference!
If for no other reason, a proper tow vehicle is a LOT less stressful on you, the vehicle and the trailer!
