This is at the front of the trailer. The lap sealant on the metal side is breaking up in small chalky pieces. The lap sealant on the rubber roof is intact, all looks heavily oxidized. The sealant around vents and T.V. antenna is oxidized but still intact. I have several questions. Should I remove all the lap sealant or just what has failed on the metal before putting down new? What should I use to remove the oxidation on the old sealant? What is safe to use on the rubber roof to remove what is left after peeling the old sealant off with a plastic scraper? I have read of people using acetone, simple green, denatured alcohol and a few others. After the new lap sealant cures I was thinking of going over it with Eternabond tape. I have watched a few videos of this being done and I like it. Interested on y’all’s thoughts about it also. Thanks in advance to everyone!

I would remove anything that is easily removed. A hair dryer can soften the material to aid removal. Here is a video that can help: dicorproducts.com/videos/

Says the site refused to connect. Probably because of the VPN, but I would think any commercial venture would make sure that wasn't a problem. Guess they need a better web provider.

Which part is moving? The front or the top? What's the black part under the joint?

I’m not sure there is movement. Both sides seem pretty solid. The black is a plastic strip that looks to be screwed down over the joint.

I guess what threw me was the residue on the corrugated part. Looks like it pulled out from under the black strip. There's a decal remover wheel, for a drill, that may help. Not sure if it would help on this project. A heat gun would. Definitely have to remove the oxidized surface of the old sealant. The powder, on your fingers, would just act as a release agent for the new sealant. Removing all the sealant would be better. Wood chisel for the majority. Not sure how good it will be stuck to the black strip. May end up with a small wire brush on a rotory Dremel tool.

I’m going to use a plastic putty knife with a hair dryer like lynnmor suggested to remove as much as possible. Then clean all surfaces with denatured alcohol before resealing.
