Just purchased a Durango Half ton (2023 D283RLT). Will be pulling with an F250 Standard Bed (6.75 ft) pickup.
Undecided on the Hitch. RV Dealer really pushes the Anderson Ultimate. I have some reservations. Not so much the safety concerns some have (margin of safety should be very high - as trailer will be ~10,500 lbs / 2,300 hitch wt on a hitch rated for 24,000 lbs / 4,500 lbs). My concern has more to do with ride quality / sound / chuck.
Towed a regular trailer for many years. Ball mounts always have some play causing noise, chuck, jerky rides. I think the AH must be the same (Maybe even more, as it mounts to the gooseneck ball, and then the trailer to the second ball mount ~15" above the p/u bed).
Everyone seems to love the B&W standard 5th wheel hitches for ride, sturdiness, ease of latching/unlatching. But then I'm concerned about turn radius.
Anyone tow a later model Durango half tone with a 6.5-6.75' bed truck? If you have just a standard 5th wheel hitch, how is the clearance and turn radius? They advertise "maximum turn radius" design, but I don't see and specifics.
Really would like to hear anyone's experience towing one of the 1/2 ton models. What hitch do you use and what clearance/turn radius do you have.
Thanks.

I have the F250 shortbed I pull a 2023 D290RLT and use the Anderson Ultimate hitch. I have pulled just over 10,000 miles this year with it and have had no issues are complaints. It is light weight and easy to take in an out of the truck. If there is a drawback it would be when hooking up by yourself are not having a spotter, you do have to be careful and may have to get out and look a couple times but that is not a deal breaker for me. I have been in some tight spots with it and not even come close to hitting the truck. When you go into the campgrounds and look around, they are easy to spot and becoming more popular. Again, I have no problem with the quality of the ride and no chucking noise. I also on occasion tow a 10' trailer behind the 5th wheel with a Polaris General on it and still no problems. I have talked to a few people that use them on the big Toy Haulers and they don't have any complaints either.
I'm plenty happy with the choice I made to go with the AUH.

Thanks - I haven't ruled out the AUH, just not completely sold. I do think with that design (looks like it moves the trailer back about 8-10") clearance should be good.

I installed a Reese goose box PN 94716 (16K lb) and use the BW gooseneck ball and chain kit GNXA2061. Can't turn 90º but maybe 80º. I love it. Oh, same truck but a D256RKT trailer.

I had it out in our dirt shop yard to check turning and had several inches clearance both R and L when going forward. I do have 4x4, so that may make some difference. I also have my B&W set to the rear, which also gives me more room. Lyle.

The B&W can be set in a couple different configurations for more clearance frt to bk and up down.

I have an ANDERSON hitch and I think it works great... I'm 78 and can install/remove with one hand.... No Chucking at all. Your mileage may vary, as they say, but I am totally satisfied!!

Just a follow up after towing for 2500 miles for anyone else considering the Andersen Ultimate.
I’m going to try to describe the Andersen hookup options. Might sound a little confusing but if you have researched the Andersen it should make sense.
I went with the Andersen ultimate w D283RLT and 2023 4WD F250 7.3l gas with 6.75’ bed. I have the standard Ford puck system that looks like it has the goose neck ball about 2” in front of rear axle. The pin box “funnel” of the Andersen can be mounted forward or backwards. The Andersen ball in the bed of the truck is offset 5”. With the funnel has a 4” offset. With the funnel mounted in front of the pin it give a full 9” offset with the trailer directly behind you, but at a 90 degree turn the trailer is 5” back and 4” further way (left or right) from the side of the Truck (think of an L).
This created plenty of room outside the truck, but unfortunately the back of the pin box was going to rub the side walls of my pickup truck bed. Probably because trucks today are so high that the back of the pin box is slightly lower than the side rails of the pickup truck bed. So I had to mount the funnel to the rear. This means the trailer is 1” back when it’s straight behind (5” ball offset - 4” funnel offset), but 5” back and 4” closer to the side when at a 90 degree.
With that all said, I can get to about 90 degrees without a problem. Probably more so due to the rounded corners of the Durango than the hitch system. Ride was smooth, no chucking or other issues on decent roads. Very happy with the drive characteristic with the exception of about 10 miles of really shitty road which was a problem.
Overall happy, but wish I could have mounted in the typical way. Only issue is with the tailgate down the tailgate will contact the trailer about the same time as when it gets to hitch position. Probably would have happened with a standard hitch as well. This means I must put the backup and get the pin box inside the truck bed, then put the tailgate back up before getting into final position. If I could have mounted the normal way it would have given me 8” of additional room. Unlike a Normal 5th wheel hitch, it is easy to “overshoot” on backup and hit the trailer.
Am I glad I went with the Andersen, - not sure. Working well, and easy to remove. But I wish I could have tried a standard hitch first and saw the turning radius.
With that said, I’m glad I didn’t go with the sliding hitch. Very heavy, some have “chucking” issues, and after having everything hooked up and measuring multiple times I think at full slide the back of the pin box would be dangerously close to hitting my tailgate
Frustrating that there are so many variables (shape of front of camper, pin box shape, truck bed dimensions, exact location of hitch in truck bed, height of truck bed and sided) that it’s almost impossible to know exactly how a hitch system is going to work until you try it out.

I have a 256RKT and tow with 2500 ram with 6.5 ram box. (Storage on each side only Ram has this. I had the ram puck system installed and use a B&W companion. I had the dealer install a Reese sidewinder to the trailer pin box. I can turn past 90 degrees without the pin box touching the side of the ram box or the cab of the truck. The only issue is the B& W companion is set at the lowest and most forward position and still travel with the trailer front high not level, this is due to the height of the 4X4 truck box. I do have 35 inch tires but stock suspension on the truck, only raised the height of the truck 1 inch as stock tires are 33 inch.

Any problems hitching with the Reese sidewinder? I like the concept and considered it, but was concerned about the complaints of slop, chuck, and difficulties in hitching. For 10 years a towed a travel trailer with a Hensley hitch. Greatest hitch in the world for towing, BUT about 1 out of every 10 times I tried to hitch up something just wasn’t lining up right and it was a total bitch. Didn’t want to be in a similar situation.

I pull a 2020 283RLT with my 07 GMC short bed. I use the B&W hitch and really like it. I've had no problem with turning clearance. I was parked next to a couple recently who purchased a new Cougar 5th wheel and had the Anderson installed at time of purchase. First time backing into a site resulted in trailer touching the cab of the truck. I only offer this to strongly encourage checking it out before you commit to the purchase.
