Was talking to a fellow camper recently, and he mentioned he used some sort of black tank cleaner, not just the typical chemical stuff, that actually digested black tank contents and did so PDQ, like 48-72 hours. They boondock a lot, and really like using this. He's not yet got back to me on what it is, but I'm just checking with others here that might use anything like this or is it just b.s.

Most of the black tank cleaners I come across say to clean the tank well, add the cleaner to a full tank and let sit for 24 - 48 hours and drive around with it also. I would only use that if I could fill before leaving home and know I'm going to a full hookup site since we would need to dump upon arrival.

Many RVer's think there waste tanks are septic tanks...they are not. Your wast tanks whether grey or black are merely "HOLDING" tanks. They were never meant to be septic tanks. A solution of Pine-Sol, Calgon bath oil beads and water...lots of water is all you need to keep you holding tanks clean and sensors working properly. Most often the black tank is not flushed properly using enough water. Chemical additives claiming to break down waste only cause other problems. The solution recommended by the pros who clean tanks is into a one gallon container 8oz Calgon bath beads, 40oz Pine-Sol and enough water to fill the remainder of the container. Shake to mix. Shake before using. 4oz of this solution will treat a 45 gallon holding tank. Think I'm full of crap??? Here is what the pros say kleentank.com/www.bing.com/videos/search?q=kleen+tank+videos&&view=detail&mid=B1BE30F7045386BB7295B1BE30F7045386BB7295&&FORM=VRDGAR&ru=%2Fvideos%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dkleen%2Btank%2Bvideos%26FORM%3DHDRSC4

Basically, the GEO Method. :-) Lyle No not quite the same as GEO. GEO uses harsh chemicals such as Borax, which is a high alkaline/sodium substance and can damage sensitive parts like gate valve seals and sensors. Dawn is a good cleaner but has no qualities like Pine-Sol. Pine-Sol is a cleaner and disinfectant and has had no harsh pine tar in it since the mid 80's. The Calgon bath oil beads are a water softener just like the liquid Calgon water softener just easier to find. Also get yourself a Valtera back flush connector so you can give your tanks an enema at least once a year. worthwhiletech.com/calgon-vs-borax-which-is-better-water-softener

I think that people like the original Dawn for its grease-cutting ability. I've not used true PineSol for decades, so don't know how well it works. Be nice to be able to find the softener beads as a generic instead of name-brand; be a whole lot cheaper. :-) When you get to SS age, you start thinking about that a LOT more. :-) Lyle
