We are very close to buying an 16RBT and a Dodger Caravan to pull it. We have a tent camper that hasn't been used for probably 20 years. I would be thankful for any advice on the camper or getting back into camping. We are excited and looking forward to camping this summer

I have a Town & Country. The towing limit is 3600 lbs. yours should be similar. We just purchased a 14RB due to the towing capacity of the van being so low. I think I liked either the 18 or 19' KZ (cant remember which one) and probably would prefer it over the 14', but we are still happy with what we have. We are planning a trip to KY in a couple of months. That will be the true test of my vans capabilities. I have a feeling we are going to be seeing a Durango in our future! :-). If we can get there & back without issue, my stress level will go down a lot! Not sure what to expect.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info. We actually bought the 18RBT and a new Caravan. The towing capacity is 3600 lbs. I am hoping that the rating on the van is legit and it can handle the camper. I don't think I would want to go any smaller and my wife loves the minivan. I have never owned a camper before and am a little nervous about handling it on the road. I am anxious to take the first trip.

I would (personally) like it if you updated this thread with the results of your "pull". Mostly curious. My 14RB is noticeable when I tow it, but not beyond reason. I had a 14' boat that felt about the same, but it didn't have brakes! I feel safer with the TT. I will eventually be looking for something with a bit more towing capacity just to be conservative & possibly upgrade the TT in the future. I too am a bit apprehensive about our first real trip. (Planning on doing a few local overnighters locally before the long haul from Florida to Kentucky). I also will be taking my empty TT to a scale this weekend & having it weighed. I'm a sucker for statistics & want to know exactly what I'm dealing with.
when I said "Durango" I meant a Dodge. :-)
Have fun on your trip!

I will definitely keep in touch on my experience. We won't be picking it up until April 15. We live near Pittsburgh so my novice camping season is a few months away. I noticed that the 18 is about 570 lbs heavier than the 14. We have a few significant hills near us that will give us a really good test. Do you have any suggestions on additional equipment?
Thanks John

Have no info. on your request but seeing you are from Pittsburgh you might be interested in the 2 rallies planned for KZ Owners. One is in July in Michigan and the other in October in Gatlinburg, TN area. Nothing has been finalized but keep your eye on the Rally Posts for upcoming info. We attended the first one last year....great time and great people.

UPDATE: we hit the road & traveled from Florida to Kentucky earlier this week. Performance of the van is anything but stellar. I had no issues overall, but it seemed to struggle a bit on the first 1/2 of the trip where we stopped in north Georgia. I must state the weather wasn't suitable for traveling & we had a considerable amount of headwind. 65 mph dropped to 60 mph on overpasses, that kind of thing.
Next day through the mountains of Tennessee was interesting, but nothing negative. 40 mph tops going up the mountain. I did not allow the transmission to kick into a gear where the engine was winding up unreasonably. Less wind & on flat ground did pretty good.
Overall the van did what I expected. I will still be looking for a replacement that has a better transmission & a bit more muscle. My concern is that I see a lot of vehicles towing trailers, & I rarely if ever see a minivan pulling a travel trailer of any size. Must be a reason for that!
One other note, I calculate that I got about 12 miles per gallon. The "proper" towing vehicle may get better mileage because it does not have to work as hard, but for everyday driving without a trailer it would be better with the van. Guess it's a tradeoff.

IMHO, Any mini van is really not made, or able to tow much more than a pop up without asking for trouble sooner or later. We have a Spree 17ft and tow it with a Chev Uplander. I'm just within my tow limits, maybe a couple hundred over when loaded. It seems to tow ok on the flats, but does struggle a bit on long upgrades. It should be ok for us, as we mainly camp locally within 50 miles or less. With that said, I wouldn't want to try towing long distance with it, as I think it would be to much for the transmission. We are going to add an external transmission cooler in hopes it will help to preserve the tranny.
Another thing to keep in mind is your warranty on your tow vehicle. If your not well within your limits, you could have a problem with warranty issues should you have any. So far we haven't had any problems but as I said, we don't travel very far. Best of luck with your new KZ.... we just love ours !

We have a 2010 Dodge Dakota and a 2011 Chrysler Town & Country. We pull a 2015 16RBT which pulls great behind both cars
