We have a GE nugget ice maker at home and DW loves it. She's now wanting one for the FW but doesn't want to drop another $600. Looking for recommendations on other ice makers. Nugget maker not required. TIA...

I have my second counter top ice maker but it was just over $100 at Home Deport. First one died after about 4 years of heavy use.

Lyle Frigidaire this time the one before was a GE. We empty the ice bucket into zip lock bags, it is wet ice so they stick together, being in the bag a good smack on the counter top. We were going through a bag every couple days at $02-$3 a bag it paid for it self in a short time. Fridge at home has two ice makers so this is part of my RV equipment stays there all the time. We always use bottled water from 3 gallon jugs and empty it when we get home.

Edd, I've seen more than one complaint about noisy units, especially Frigidaire. Did you have the same issue?

Frigidaire. The key to using countertop icemakers is to put it on a level surface and not use it for at least an hour. Activating it right out of the box will result in problems because the refrigerant hasn't settled.

Just for y'all's FYI, we have the GE Profile Opus 2 at home. It's normally pretty quiet, though it did start making some noise in the water pump. I've =never= cleaned or descaled it in the nearly 2 years we've owned it, beyond the initial setup. Our kids have the same unit and they're having to clean it every 1-2 weeks. It =squeals=, loudly, when it's making ice. Sounds very much like the squeeking you get when walking on snow. It's so loud, they turn it off at night as they can hear it across the house in their bedrooms. They've tried letting it defrost completely, which worked for 1-2 days, then they've taken to cleaning it at least monthly. I need to check to see if they've done a full descale, with straight vinegar and letting it sit for 18 hours. I've got about 2 more hours before I clean mine back up and put it back in service. We =both= use RO water exclusively and I've noticed that their unit always has more scaling than mine does. Last readings on our water were 38 ppm for my RO and 41 ppm for theirs. Our city water is about 700 ppm.
