The state driving laws are confusing. In my state of Nevada and many others, if the GVWR of the trailer is over 10000 lbs, a NCDL license is required, not what the scale says when hooked up. I have a GMC Duelly and a 382MBQ. My scale weight was 5260 steer-7320-Drive-12860-trailer=total-25440 and I was under the 26000 lb limit so I thought I was good. Even called DMV and dealer said good. EVERYONE WAS WRONG. A NCDL is required.

Looking at this Nevada non-commercial study guide for Class A, B & J endorsements it would seem that you're good from not having to get a Class A license, however they get you at the under of 26K pounds with requiring a Class J license based on the weights you posted. Per the attached link pages 5 & 6: J Endorsement Towing: May tow a vehicle (GVWR) or a combination of vehicles (GCWR) of more than 10,000 pounds. The combination of vehicles may not exceed 70 feet in length or have a combined weight rating or a combined weight that exceeds 26,000 pounds. If the combination of the towing vehicle and the towed vehicle(s) exceed 26,000 lbs., a Class A license is required. I think the DMV and the dealer were for sure confused or just not trained right, which sucks if you've already got a trip planned and now have to deal with it all.

Be willing to bet there's a grace period. That's pretty standard when new regs go into effect.

It’s just as confusing up here in Canada between provinces. Looking at the Nevada link posted I read at the beginning that the GVW rating of the trailer cannot exceed the GVW rating of the truck towing the trailer. What are your numbers? Here in Manitoba I can double tow my fifth wheel and boat with certain limitations of length and weight with my class of license. As long as GVWR does not exceed 10,000 lbs on each vehicle. The actual weight of the towed vehicles cannot exceed double of the trucks weight. All this of course is limited to your GCVWR of the truck towing. I have a 2013 Sierra 2500HD with a GVW of 9900 lbs and tow my D250RES and a 17’ Crestliner 1700 Fish Hawk aluminum boat.

Dully & something 40ft+ might get you there not sure of dully weights as the SRW has been fine for my towing needs.

Kristi Noem another ranch lady like Sandra Day O'connor likely the best justice of the Supreme Court there has been in my life. Good common sense rulings that made sense not political motivated. She was in office most of my career and her decisions affected my work daily.

My grandparents were acquainted with her family, as we were farmers and my granddad was very active in many U of A, ASU and numerous other ag-related activities. Lyle

To all, any 5er or trailer in Nevada that weighs 10000 or more require a J or class A license. My truck GVWR is 14000 and the 5er is GVWR of 16000 so the potential weight is there. My 5er dry weighed 13345 so I needed a class A. There are 13 other states that are the same way and a few that do not. I Got my class A and solved. My thing was (hope not) in an accident, the insurance company COULD deny the claim if not legally licensed to drive due to weight or license requirements. A single vehicle over 24000 require a class B. This is many motor homes on the road, just check your state.

If I get into an accident, I'm totally legal. Stupid... Lyle

They just do not enforce it but they can.

I have no tickets or accidents. Full coverage on GMC DRW and 5er and a beater Toyota. I don’t think 105 a month is bad.
