The panel in our 211 Connect MKSE has two switches for the water heater: gas and electric. Does the electric switch have to be turned on to use the electric heating mode or is turning on the electric mode at the water heater sufficient. I guess I don't understand why there are two switches...

The one on your panel allows to to control the electric element from inside. Keep the one on the water heater 'on' all the time and you can turn it on and off with the panel switch. You can also run the heater on gas and electric at the same time. Heats quicker and recovers faster. Remember though, since you only have 30 amp service, do not run any other high power draw appliances, microwave, hair dryer, toaster or space heater while the electric switch is on. The water heater does not use very much propane since it only runs for a short period. Also, make sure you turn the element off if and when you drain the water heater.
