To those of you who use air bags on your tow vehicle, especially with fifth wheels, do you notice a harsher ride when you have them aired down and no trailer? Thinking about adding air bags to help with smoothing the ride when loaded, but don't want a terribly harsh ride when unloaded.

Air bags are just an additional spring. When pressure is dropped to the usual 5 psi, there will be only a small increase in firmness of the ride. Don't expect ride quality to improve with air bags, the one exception is a truck that is loaded to where the leaf springs are at a level that the overload plies come into play repeatedly.

That was what I thought. If the highway departments would fix the bridge approaches so that you aren't hitting a 1 to 3 inch step when you get to a bridge, it wouldn't be a big deal. I was hoping maybe air bags would help lessen that shock when you hit things like that. Not thinking I would really need them with my boat trailer attached, or even my small flat bed, but I only tow my fifth wheel about once a month, and for that then it may not be worth the money. I can think of other shiny new toys to spend the money on!

If the State Highway "authorities" would address SAFE ROAD CONDITION with the same FERVOR they address Vehicle Code Compliance, Our BRIDGES, for example, would not be serving as Launch Platforms. They are satisfied as long as it is On the Driver but not so much when it is ON THEM. <Rant>

Yep where did all the money for roads and bridges go. I know it wasn't spent on I-20 thru Shreveport or anywhere on I-20 in Louisiana. Thats a section I will not travel again anytime soon. (also a rant)

I looked at airbags but the salesman talked me into timbren bump stops, they only cost a little over 300.00 and no messing around with airlines and stuff like that and I installed them in 30 minutes. I like them, they are rubber and they sit 1/2" to an 1" off from the axel unloaded. When I put my fifth wheel on it sets down on them but my truck doesn't sit so low and it takes out the side rocking that can happen.
