How many out there tow another trailer behind their 5th wheel. Be it a boat or OHV. Will be making first long trip double towing. I will have a 10' trailer with a Polaris General behind my 5th wheel. I have made several short runs with no issues. I have an external fuel tank so I shouldn't have to try and get into tight places to fuel up. Will be leaving Texas and towing out through New Mexico Colorado Utah and Wyoming. Any dos are don'ts appreciated.

Hi, I would check state laws and regulations before you set out. I found this guide, not sure how current it is: rv-roadtrips.thefuntimesguide.com/triple_towing/I noticed that Wyoming is not on the list of states where triple towing is allowed.

I'd be surprised if WY didn't allow it, as I've seen commercial triples (i.e. 3 trailers on a tractor) up there, but there are some states that allow commercial doubles / triples but don't allow non-commercial. Also, if your small trailer has a GVW of 3k, or more, you'd need brakes on it, in most states. I've read plenty of stories on the various RV fora for years, about people who "never get stopped", until they do. :-) In AZ doubles are allowed, so long as the first trailer is a FW; second trailer is a ball or pintle. You can not double a GN trailer with a ball/pintle behind it, though I've seen it more'n once around here. Also, check your =lengths=. Here in AZ, legal length is 65' from the front bumper to the center of the rearmost axle. You are also allowed 10' of "overhang" to the rearmost point of the rear trailer for an OAL of 75'. Think a boat trailer with an outboard or sterndrive. Other states may be different. Check... Lyle

When I purchased my 5th wheel there was no safety chains with it. I quizzed my dealer very hard about this and he reassured me that it did not have to have them. Everything I read looks like it does have to have them. I use the Andersen hitch not sure if that makes a difference. Looks like I need to call some DMV's Wyoming I have read where it doesn't allow the triple and I have read where it does. Thanks for the input and welcome more from others.

James Fifth wheel trailers, when using a fifth wheel hitch, do not need safety chains, just as a semi doesn't. When you go to =any= sort of ball, pin or pintle hitch, most states require safety chains. This includes goosenecks, since they are a form of ball hitch. Same with the Andersen; it's a ball hitch and requires safety chains in states that require them. That being said, unless you're hauling commercially, you're very likely not to get inspected, let along cited, unless something bad happens, if you don't have chains. After over 50 years of towing, I learned just how important they are when I hit a set of tracks and the hitch lock popped loose (forgot the clip or it fell out; not sure) and the trailer popped off the ball. The safety chains kept it from wandering across several lanes and into traffic. Lyle

Did some checking I can get a set of safety chains from Andersen for less than 100 bucks. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to install them. They have been ordered.
After research looks as if all states I'm visiting I should be legal in for the double are triple tow which ever a person calls it.
Thanks James

As noted state and/or provincial laws must be followed. I haul a D250RES and my 17’ aluminum fishing boat behind it. Our length limit is 75’ and cannot exceed GCVWR of your tow vehicle. Both mine together are around 11k pounds.

I pull a 14’ trailer with my General XP4 behind my fifth wheel a lot and have had no issues. Just don’t turn short enough to get the front corner of your trailer into the back corner of your 5er. I use a rear view camera to keep an eye on the OHV because you can’t see it at all unless you’re turning a corner. We’ll be leaving for Creede Colorado next month for the summer with the General in tow. I was told by a state trooper a couple of years ago that the state prefers tourist dollars over traffic fine dollars. Jay

I have a camera on the back of the 5th wheel. We will be going to Marysvale Utah with the General in tow as well end of June then from there over to Wyoming. Last year we were in Lake City. On the way back to Texas we will stop back there again.

Don’t know how long you plan to be in Lake City but maybe we’ll run into you there. We plan to be in Creede until October 1. Jay
