We're looking, most likely, at the G382MBQ. It has a quoted DRY hitch weight of 2490, just below the UVW of 13,990. To determine what truck I need for this, don't I have to know the maximum hitch (pin) weight? From what I've read and watched dry hitch weight is sort of meaningless and useless. Any load placed in front of the axles will add to hitch weight, and any placed behind will subtract from pin weigh, I would think. Pretty much everything I've seen so far says truck payload is the critical weight to look at, then tow capacity and CGVW. Or am I incorrect? If so, please educate me!!

Pretty much everything I've seen so far says truck payload is the critical weight to look at, then tow capacity and CGVW. Or am I incorrect? If so, please educate me!! Rule of thumb is usually 20-25% of the FW's GVW is a good weight range to use. You can ask around for other 382 owners what their pin weights are to get a feel for real world weights. Be aware that some people travel pretty light while others push the boundaries, so that range could still be pretty wide. With a GVW of 16k, you're probably looking at near 4k lbs on the pin, so use that as your guide. At 16k, though, you'd likely be pushing a SRW truck's payload limit, especially if you're planning on tool boxes and/or aux fuel in the truck bed, so you may want to look at duallies. As for loading fore/aft of the axles, you won't change the pin a whole lot, unless you're storing cases of ammo in the front closet. :-) With my old Komfort, when we headed out to a boondocker, I'd load all my extra water jugs / bottles and ice as far back as I could get, as I knew I was exceeding the RAWR on my venerable '02 D'max 2500 by a couple hundred lbs, though my tires were well under their limits. I did a rough calc and adding about 250 lbs of ice and water behind the axles only lightened my pin by about 25-30 lbs, but I figured it was better'n nuttin'. :-) Lyle

That pin weight of 2490 would exceed the payload on my 2013 Sierra 2500HD which is 2374. I believe you should be looking at a dually for pulling your trailer. My Durango D250RES has a posted pin weight of 1430. Actual pin weight loaded as needed is 1606. Axle weight loaded is 6644. That’s a 17.3% pin weight. Tows like a dream even with the 17’ aluminum boat in tow. Don’t know pin weight with boat on.

After my washer/dryer installation and generator and everything else needed, my pin weight is over 3200. The 382 is a dully rig.

You can't really rely on the published pin weight. Don't forget the hitch in your truck bed that's around 300lbs. My unit has a dry pin weight of 2590. After driving up to the cat scale with full fuel in truck and full tank of water in RV (840 lbs roughly) I calculated a pin weight of 2980. I calculated this by taking my drive axle weight with truck only. After weighing both I had a drive axle weight with the additional weight the truck was taking on. I took the difference and got 2980, assuming my formula is correct. I was shocked to find that my Ford 350 was overloaded by 400 pounds. I didn't exceed any axle ratings though. The truck performs well, keep forgetting the 5th wheel is behind me. I've been towing it over mountain passes that are 10,000 feet above sea level.

The published weights are averages, each unit used to come with the actual weight as it left the factory. In my case that included the washer and dryer as well as the generator. As previously stated, owner added weights can add up....my tools in the basement and the wife's spring collection in the front closet are examples. My take is at that length and weight, the stability of a dually is highly desirable. Attachments:

My 333 has a published dry pin weight of 2080. In reality, depending upon how much fresh water and gear I’m carrying, it runs around 2600. Now, I load pretty heavily so others may be lighter, but advertised pin weight is usually quite low.
