I’m looking for truck options for my 382MBQ.
My truck in my sig has served me well for years. But it’s definitely not rated for the 382MBQ.
Over Easter weekend I looked and test drove many rigs. And definitely liked a few.
Living in the Seattle/Tacoma area I’d like to have a SRW vs DRW. However, I really like idea of DRW given the weight and height of this trailer. Especially for long trips and wind.
I’d like to find a used option starting from 2008+ So here are a few of my options; 2008 F450 6.4L - 8'2" Bed DRW 4.88 gear (82,xxx) 2008 F450 6.4L - 8'2" Bed DRW 4.30 gear (83,xxx) 2010 F450 6.4L - 8’2” Bed DRW 4.30 gear (130,xxx) 2016 F350 6.7L - 8'2" Bed DRW 4.10 gear (120,xxx) 2019 F450 6.7L - 8'2" Bed DRW 4.30 gear (41,xxx) 2021 Sierra 3500 Denali HD 8'2" Bed SRW 4.10 gear (61,xxx) 2022 Silverado 3500 - 8'2" Bed DRW 4.10 gear (22,xxx)
I drove the F450 with 4.88 and absolutely loved it. I think the 4.88’s are a bit overkill and I definitely won’t see any good mileage with/without the trailer, lol.
The Chevy and GMC both look great and have great reviews. But just not sure I want to drop $70K or 80K into a truck. And with the both 2008 F450 still low in miles for $33k it seems like a good deal.
So there ya have it. My quick list truck options. Thoughts? Thanks.

I have a 2016 GMC 2500HD which I like very well. My Durango Half Ton is not a 'large' unit. But it has worked well for me... I did pull it with a 5 X 8 UHaul behind for 1100 miles... couldn't tell it was there. But everyone will have their own experience/background and *Your Mileage May Vary*. Just be HAPPY with what you settle on. :-) :-)

I would stay away from the 6.4 Fords, as I haven't heard a lot of good things about them, so I would do some research to verify. I have had and have 6.7's (2017 & 2020) both have been trouble free. Being a Ford guy I would go for the 2019 F 450, but that 4:30 is going to kill any hope of mileage.

Thoughts? Thanks. Be aware that some F450s can actually have LESS payload than the heaviest payload F350. More than a few 450 buyers have been caught by this. Check the data plate on the door of the 450 to be 100% sure. With the newer D'maxes, you'll get the 10-speed Allison, so the 4.xx gears shoudn't affect you quite as much. Lyle

I'm in the process of buying a 2022 F350 SRW to pull my 13K Durango and I had to look months. There are a lot of used F350's but long bed, nope, like looking for snow in July. The good on the F450 is it has a better turning radios as it has a different front end.

Maybe a bit late to the discussion, but I'm also in the Pacific Northwest with the 2022 version of the 382MBQ and thought I would share my experience. I'm pulling with 2021 GMC 3500 AT4 SRW diesel with a standard bed. Have been thrilled with both the truck and the 5th wheel and have put 1000's of miles on the combo so far. The 2020+ Chevy/GMC 3500 diesels have remarkably high payloads (a least compared to what I was used to seeing a decade ago) so I haven't had any over-payload rating concerns. I was also very pleasantly surprised at the tight turns I can make comfortably without worrying about truck/trailer contact.

Buddy has a Durango Gold 366FBT 40ft 12K dry he pulld with a SRW GMC 3500 Denali with all the bells. He loves it and has traveled coat to coast. I pull a KZ DG that comes in about 13K loaded with an F350 CCLB in every kind of weather, wind, rain, snow (not by choice) and have had no issues. I see most of what you looking at is DRW and I really do not think you need a DWR unless your worried about loosing a tire and the stability of the DRW. I'm on my 3rd F350 all SRW long beds to pull multi 5er's.

I have to agree with the comment about the 6.4, they put out some serious power but they are a ticking time bomb. They used the lifters and rockers that they did in the 6.0, they can not handel the power the 6.4 puts out, I forgot how thousands that cost me. The other problem is that international that's who made the motor, decided for cleaning out the catalytic converter they would dump excess fuel down the 4 and 8 cylinder and then ignite it on fire and burn it out.. That washes all the oil out of the cylinders and there goes the rings. The you have to have a new motor.

Not sure the difference but my 15 got 11 -12 daily driving and as low as 9 towing. My new 22 same body style Lariat CCLB has been getting 20+ highway, haven't towed yet but looking forward to getting hookup.

That's a big difference in fuel mileage, do you know what your gear ratio was in the two different years or if it was the same?

Aside from engine changes, the biggest difference is '22 has 10 spd trans, '15 had 6 spd trans. With my'20 I have seen 20+ MPG bobtailing on the freeway, 18 running around town, my '17 gave me about 2-3 MPG less. When towing with the '20 I have picked up about 2 MPG (10 VS-12).

I'm also probably late to the party, but thought I'd throw my two cents in, too. we're towing a 2019 382MBQ with a Ford 2020 F350 DRW with the 6.7 diesel, with a limited slip 3:50 rear end. Fuel mileage with a loaded trailer drops to around 10 mpg, and a little lower pulling a grade. The truck gets about 20mpg without the trailer, and about the same on flat ground pulling it. Ford put a 10speed tranny in their superdutys starting in 2020 and that makes a huge difference. If you are looking at Ford, definitely consider 2020 or newer.

I picked up my '22 Denali up in Alberta and driving down through MT and UT, where the speed limit is 80, I was driving 90 and seeing 18-19 mpg on the flat. Blew my mind... :-) Will be towing for the first time in 2 weeks. Will have to check mileage then. Lyle

That's a big difference in fuel mileage, do you know what your gear ratio was in the two different years or if it was the same? 3:55 on both. my guess is the 10 speed vs 6 on the 15.

I have a 2022 Silverado LT w/ a Duramax and the 10 speed Allison transmission. I towed a 32' car hauler/RV (with a car inside) across country 18 months ago. I now tow a 30' C241RLK. My truck never even slows down. Down shifted, yes. Slows down, no. Look at the Duramax's HP and Torque ratings, plus it's a full boxed frame. You can't go wrong. My mileage is about 8.5-10 mpg towing in Trailer mode. No matter what I'm towing.

While I've not yet weighed my rig, I did have to tow it with full water, 61 gallons or ~490 lbs, from 1,200' elevation up to 7,000' elevation, with many ups and downs in-between. I'm showing 10.8 on Trip 1. We normally run pretty light, so I'd be willing to bet that we weren't over 9.5k lbs, loaded. Truck ran like a scalded cat with that light load. :-) I =did= screw up and forgot the T/H mode, though I was using the exhaust brake. I'm used to the shifter-button T/H from my '02. Taking a while to get used to all the doodads and gewgaws. :-)
