I have a 2005 Coyote; I took the sway bar out of the right front outside storage compartment several days and when I attempted to put it back in yesterday, I am unable to unlock it! I am using the correct key and the two thumb latches are in the open position, but the lock simply refuses to unlock. Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts?
Thanks, Don

Jimnancy Thank you for your reply; I'm not sure what you mean by "back way". The key doesn't fit in but one way. I checked it on the other outside locks, some opened if you turn the key clockwise, some when you turn counter-clockwise. This one won't open no matter you turn it. Again, the strange thing is I opened it a few days ago and it was fine!

The typical compartment lock is made up of the locking cylinder and a flat bar that actually "locks" the door. The square portion on the bar locks into the cylinder when the nut is tight. It is possible that the bar has come loose, causing the cylinder to spin without turning the bar. Try pulling the door toward you with light pressure as you turn the key. This may cause the bar to lock against the door frame allowing the cylinder to "catch" (turn) it. If the locks are on the side, you may try to push the door in, while simultaneously turning the key & shaking the door. If the bar is real loose it could fall from the horizontal position to vertical (unlocking door). If you can access the compartment from under a bed, or thru the other side, have someone climb in there and turn the bar manually. Then you can inspect it to insure that all is tight & functioning properly before re-closing door. Good Luck!

Shoestring: Great post, thank you. I will try your suggestions. I have also thought it may be possible to slip something flat (hacksaw blade, etc) in and try to move the lever to the unlock position.

As shoestring said, and I suggest,,,, Push in real hard on the door and then try the lock at the same time. A last resort might be to grab the whole lock assembly and turn the whole thing counter clockwise until it starts spinning free,,,th nut might come off the back and let you in. Use FINESS when doing any of this. I had a "LOOSE" nut on one of my locks and I turned it and opened the door. I still push on the door now to open it with the key. I prefer alittle tight over being to loose. Get some lithium grease and spray in all your trailer locks. They will all work better. Hope this helps.

When we had our Montego bay I think i might have run into the same problem. The key would not turn the lock so I sprayed WD40 in the lock and worked it back and forth with the key and it finally let loose. On the other side basement door a snap ring in the lock broke and there was no way it was going to turn. Lucky 5th wheels have a big pass thru basement because I had to go in the other side and take the lock apart with a screwdriver form the inside the basement. If you try to spin the lock assembly from outside be warned--the hole in the door for the lock has 2 flat sides to prevent the lock from spinning. I would think this would be the same on Coyotes doors. I hope this was a little helpful. Hope you can get it opened without too much hassle. I did take all the basement locks off and replaced them with the combination locks so I didn't have to carry my keys to open them. I used them for 3 seasons and they were still working fine when we upgraded to the Stoneridge. A shot of some kind of lube in each lock once a year really helps prevent problems.

Can you access from inside the trailer? under a bench/bed etc. you might have something that has fallen and is jamming the lock.
