I was wondering if anyone out there can advise if installing an axle truss (like they do on off road vehicles) to strengthen and support a trailer axle if feasible.
From what I have read, especially with single axle campers, the axle is the bare minimum rating the manufacturer can get away with. An axle truss fitted over the axle will strengthen the axle and reduce the chance of failure on rough roads, especially when loaded to the max.......which would be the norm on a smaller single axle trailer.
Comments would be appreciated.

You couldn't fill a thimble with what I know on this subject but wouldn't going to a beefier axle/spring setup be a better/simpler solution? Over the axle trusses reduce clearance with the bottom of the unit which might create other issues on rough roads. Any way you slice it, you are exceeding known parameters for operating the trailer. Interested in others' opinions for sure...

I've known a few people that have replaced the axles to upgrade to higher rated ones. I don't think it was that expensive to do. Not sure if that would accomplish what you want though. I've never heard of anyone adding trusses.

Like kbrady said, just change the axle. Here's a link to the Dexter manufacturing, your axle will be "light duty" from 1000-8000. Depending on what you have all you may need is the axle assembly and spring, you can reuse the breaks etc. Rather than trying to "fix" the light axles just change it to the weight you want. axle link
Now you will hear from the weight police that the gross weight sticker on the TT will not change and that's all you can legally load. You will know that weights been upgraded.

In addition to upgrading the axles, I made cross members for side to side support. The frames are made so light that they flex and crack. MORryde makes bolt in cross members if you don't want to make one piece custom fit parts. As you can see, the links are the same color as the text, just click on MORryde.

Thanks guys, will go with a Dexter 3500HD axel and Sumo helper springs. The local fabrication shop says they can reinforce the frame somewhat.....but as the weight police say, the GVWR will not change, just a better safer ride.
