We are looking at surge protectors do we pick portable or hardwired? Should we go with Watchdog + EPO Progressive EMS? Thanks for the insight, Debi

Hi Debi I have the Durango 301RLT I have been using a Progressive portable for years it has worked great with no issues . I do try and lock it up to the post with a chain or cable but I have also left it unlocked with no issues . Whatever your preference is and feel comfortable with. Not sure this helped any. Happy trails Ken F250 Durango 301

I went with the progressive hardwired, primarily because I don't need another item to remember to not leave. Obvious down side of the hardwired is it needs to be installed, which isn't all that complicated, but not everyone is comfortable with electrical work. Either portable or hardwired is fine. A good feature is all the components in the hardwired model are replaceable without needed to remove the entire unit.

There's pros and cons for either style. I have a portable EPO Progressive EMS. Once it got fried and I just had to take pictures of the burnt areas and they sent me a new one within a week. It was also a newer model than the one the went bad. Without it, it would have been the trailer. Just make sure you get one. I leave mine attached to my cord all the time, it would be hard to forget unless you left the cord too.

I have a Progressive portable that I got used and it works just fine...on 50a. Won't work on 30a, though. I should maybe look for a 30a EMS for those times when a 50a plug isn't available.

I got the Hughes Watchdog + EPO portable. So far, never locked it and never an issue. My friends also have been using portables for years and they never lock them. The built-in is nice because you don't need to worry about pulling it out and plugging it in, but then, depending on your rig's design, installing it may or may not be straightforward.
The watchdog has a couple nice features that I like, first is the bluetooth connection to the phone. Not only is it nice to just keep an eye on the voltage, but when the DW tries running the AC plus water heater plus microwave all at the same time, the app makes resetting the overcurrent feature easy. Secondly, I like that it has a user replaceable surge unit. I bought a spare so in case it ever blows, I can swap it out on the spot vs having to send it in.
Both Hughes and Progressive are good units. Progressive has been around a lot longer, though.

I have been using a Surge Guard for several years. I don't stay in any areas I don't think safe and I do a walk about before leaving camp so no items get left. We actually do two, I go on way the wife the other looking for slides in, doors closed, windows closed ,nothing n the ground etc. I watch the surge protector packing I know what it cost to replace.
