We upgraded from a pop-up last fall to a used 2015 Spree Escape 196S & love the TT life BUT we weighed our rig on CAT scales this weekend (tanks empty) & we're already near the max GVWR of 3500lbs for the trailer with just the basics, clothes & food for our family of 4 for a 3 day trip - how do people do it - what am I doing wrong? Seems like it wouldn't even be possible to travel with your tanks full if you added nothing else to the trailer... is this typical of TTs?

You didn't buy enough trailer. "People" do all kinds of things and overloading trailers and tow vehicles are all too common.
I would tell you to upgrade the tires, axles and springs, but I believe that the frame isn't up to more weight.

Haha - so true Lynnmor! Before we purchased a unit I was meticulous about making spreadsheets of GVWR/GCWR/tongue weights - all the moving pieces to make sure we were well under the capacities of our tow vehicles & I never took a hard look at the cargo capacity - I figured campers that "sleep 5" would have enough capacity to carry what you would need for a family of 4. With some minor adjustments like putting the food & clothing in the tow vehicle we'll be fine but it's been a learning experience for sure!

You’re CCC is low due to it’s only a single axle trailer. A 22’ camper really should be a dual axle setup.

Since RV's are hot right now, you may be able to sell and correct the mistake without too big of a financial hit.

A couple of years back I looked into this. Appears that KZ simply upgraded the axle from the 3500# to 4500# for newer years (not sure which exactly thou). Not sure exactly how much it could be upgraded (whether past 4500# or not) but will definitely be having it assessed when the time comes. This is something on our to-do list once current tires need replacing. Until then, we try to ensure some of the heavier things needed are in the box of the truck vs in the trailer (likely won't be able to if you're using an SUV). We did remove the microwave though (for extra storage) as we never use one even at home (plus while camping we cook on an open flame). Likely why KZ changed the axles on newer years...
