1st I'm sure you checked the batteries in the remote. 2nd you must be almost straight on to get the remote to work. If these two fail on the lower right of the tv you should find the manual.controls

Thanks jetzen. I bet with the tv installed into the cabinet door that swings open above fireplace, the controls are covered up within the cabinet door frame. I am assuming controls on lower right of the side and not the very front of TV. LOL ... unmount TV to see controls or try getting a new remote. Found original remote and is on order.

There is a known issue with the Sansui televisions. If power cycles to the tv too quickly (say you unplug it and plug it right back in), the television will not turn on and act like it's dead. Unplug the television and leave it unplugged for a couple hours. Plug it back in and see if it works correctly.
I had it happen a bunch when I first got the trailer. Part of my tear-down process now is that I unplug all of the televisions. Then after we're done setting up, I will plug them in when ready to use them. It's super frustrating to have to sit around for hours before your tv will work again (especially if it's raining!)

If it's just antenna or cable sound, that generally only comes through the TV. Your DVD player should go through the surround sound system. If your TV is routed through the surround sound somehow, make sure the audio output option in the TV settings is set to the correct channel (e.g. Optical or whatever). Also can't hurt to try a different cable as well.
