We just Purchased a 2021 301 RLT we have a F250 short box 6`3/4 . I was going to go with the companion hitch but sales person talked me into the Companion Manuel slider its on back order . I have noticed the nose of the 5th wheel is past the pin but wonder if the regular Companion hitch would work anyway. I would much rather get the regular hitch because of weight and size . Would like to see what other people think . Will the regular hitch do the job . Your opinions would be appreciated . Thanks kenc

You will find the new 5W's have rounded corners on the front caps to help reduce cab contact. The head of the Companion hitch can be installed in multi positions to change clearance & height. The install directions show how to measure and adjust. There are a couple PDF docs on the net that show the adjustments, look up 3370 install if this link does not work link
I love the B&W best hitch of the three I have owned.

Thanks kenc You state that the front cap extends beyond the pin, which leads me to believe that you don't have an extended pin box. You can swap out the pin box for a longer one to move the rig back a bit for more cab clearance. It will also give you more clearance between your tailgate and rig. I know that there are some people who have to have someone latch the tailgate while they back in as it will hit before the pin latches. Personally, my truck ('02 CC short box 4x4) would not hit my old square front Komfort at full lock R or L going =forward=. I have even more room with my current KZ. ALL will hit when backing up. A slider will give you more room before you DO hit, though. I have my old-style Companion set as far forward as it will go and as high as it will go. Lyle

I was wondering about the same issue a while ago when I asked for help on this forum. I went from an 8 foot bed to a six and three-quarter on my new Ford F-350. My Durango is a 2017. I put a flex air pin box on it a couple years ago and it extends farther than the factory pin box did. So far I have not had an issue. I took my old Reese hitch out of my previous truck and installed it in the new truck and it is not a slider. If you can, hook up to the truck and go to a big parking lot and give it a test run.

Thanks kenc I do not have a Companion hitch but tow with a conventional hitch in a Ram 2500 w/6' 4" bed and I too noticed that the nose cone extends past the pin even with the extended pin box. There is probably enough clearance with the rounded corners of the front cap, but I replaced the pin box with a Reese Sidewinder and now have lots of clearance even if I need to completely jackknife the trailer. I prefer it over a slider because it permanently moves the pivot point back to the turret where the pin box mounts and you do not have to manually move anything. It is very well built and is available with shock absorption if you so choose. Hope this helps. Jay

NO I have always bought long beds so I can carry a sheet of plywood or dry wall. I have RV'ed years & belong to several RV forums. Common question when people own or are looking to buy a short bed. Moved from an F250 to a F350 two trucks back.

I had a F250 SB that did fine....until I was backing my coach into its spot next to the house when the trailer nose contacted the rear window of the truck. If all you ever do is maneuver on completely flat ground you wont need a slider. But all it takes is backing and turning while the trailer is going up a slight grade... or making a tight turn with the truck going up a grade.....Good news is Safelite can have a replacement in a day or so with pretty quick installation.

I decided to go with the regular B&W Companion tried for the first time and I think it will be fine . I had a roll up tonneau cover and that cut the turning radius down so I went with a lower profile cover . I think with that cover I will get a 80-85 % turning radius I have yet to try it out with the new cover but will be soon . I will let you know how it works out. Thanks again for all the feed back really appreciated it

I would agree you made a good choice on the B&W. I get an easy 80 degree turn with mine in my 6'9" Chevy short bed. Not to mention it pulls great.
