I know we have a couple prior long haul drivers here and I still receive news etc from a long haul association I was in. I got a link to mountain driving video, specifically I-70 in CO. Having been across this many many times I thought RVs, might be info they could use. This is good general info on mountain driving towing anything even though this was targeted to the long haul guys & gals crossing through Vail. Video link

Though some without any mountain driving might get some info for just general mountain driving any where. Remember you can go down hundreds of times too slow, once too fast.

Good info, a lot of RVers forget that when hauling a big fiver, you have more in common with big rigs than the cars.

I agree with nvguy an tnxs Edd for your post As I Edd I drove over the road big rigs as well I trained drivers to also do such .... I drove 48 states an Canada an crossed may passes over the years I drove ...
I have seen many accidents invoking all types of vehicles including RV's, I have read many posts of
how owners can go over hills an mountains at 50 an 60mph an wonder how they make it down the back side of some of them ... Out here in the Western United States some of are passes are 6 percent
for many miles up an down an doing such speeds scares me ... When I was teaching drivers I would
tell them that you go down the hill at the same speed an gear as you went up the hill an in some case's
a lower gear an speed ... So if you go up the hill at 45mph you go down the hill at 45mph an the same gear ...
Nothing like passing a family at the bottom of one of the long grades where all the brakes are smoking an you can see the fear in the face of the driver Ugh !!!
Please be safe an always remember it's always about your safety an the safety of drivers around you, taking your time means you will get there, it may be a few minutes longer but you, your family an others around you while driving all get there
As I have said may times, we want to talk to you an not about you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember driving on 70 and coming out of the Eisenhower Tunnel WB, heading up to ski at Vail. I was driving my brother's lifted truck with 35's and it was blowing...I don't know how hard. I was on the downgrade and having to keep my foot on the gas or I'd've been blown back uphill! :-) Funny thing was, it wasn't bad at all on the hill.

How =long= is that grade? Lyle 1 Mile, been on roller coasters not that steep. I hauled into a gold mine near Payson, 12% for about a mile and a half with just under 80,000lbs copper plate. They turned me around in the mine and reloaded me with used copper plates, just under 80,000 going out. Company wanted to know why I was running late, replied I need a faster truck or less weight that ended that.

I don't know how you could have made it in and out with that weight on dirt without a helper for braking going in and traction on the way up! Lyle

Lyle Just flip the diff lock and drive on, black topped near Payson AZ, big gravel lot across the street, have to dig out old logs to find the name. I know the load was from and back to Asarco Amarillo TX

The mine could be a bit south of Payson I do recall the town, small cafe I ate at. Grades were no a big issue with 500HP & 13 speeds, 4-5 through and intersection and full jakes down hill.

Uncle was co driver an threatened to jump out of truck 3/4 down the hill ... I think we broke the land speed record that day with brakes smoking an him yelling were gonna die Ugh

Yeah, no runaway ramps EB, so that had to have been one wild ride, not that those ramps are a picnic.

Open pit with what I think was a smelter, it may have been Prescott, been more than a couple years. Been thinking about your picture, tractor pull in Welton?

Not me. I'm in Chandler, though some guys from our club have gone down there. I remember there was a great collection down there that they auctioned off a number of years ago. It was the week after a big auction here in Chandler and some of the prices here were surprisingly low due to people holding back the big bucks for the Wellton auction. I bought an IH "tumble" plow (has both R and L bottoms and rolls over in the direction of travel instead of rolling parallel to direction of travel) there. Some of the highlights were a '35 or '36 JD A that was literally brand new. Sat at a dealer for 28 years, then was sold off after the owner (Indian along the CO River) never picked it up and they considered it abandoned. Had < 20 hours TT since it left the factory. Another Deere was a '34 Model AA that was the most factory-original AA in the world, according to an expert on vintage Deere tractors. (AA's had some severe design issues and they were recalled back to the factory for mods, then re-labeled as A's. This one never went back.) A '23 Waterloo Boy. An Irish built Fordson, from Co. Cork, IIRC. Lots and lots of other stuff, too. Lyle
