The Hughes Autoformer Power Watchdog is pricey. The C261RL I just bought has 30 amp service. I don't know what campgrounds I'll end up in over time. If I get the 30 amp system and the site has 50 amp service I can just us a 50 amp adapter, right? Or is the better approach to get a 50 amp protector and use a 30 amp adapter.
Or, have I missed something and the consensus is a different product would be a better approach?
I have enjoyed the General RV Questions forum and look forward to your replies.

No need to have a 50 amp for a 30 amp trailer unless you intend to move to a 50 amp trailer in the future.
With campgrounds full and voltages dropping, In my opinion an autoformer is a good investment. If voltage is low you do without air conditioning and the microwave. The folks with an EMS only will be shut down completely.
