We took our (new to us, 2012 Sportsmen 170) on its maiden voyage this weekend. Shake down, for a larger trip next month. Wife said the hot water was a tad bit too hot. Eager to save propane, I was more than glad to turn it down. Question is...how? I looked every where for a thermostat. My dad, a seasoned trailer owner, ridiculed me...insisted he would show me...gave up shaking his head. Searched the manual...no mention of being able to adjust temp. Are we missing an obvious adjustment point? Are they factory set at a non-adjustable temp?

Shoestring,
Your hot water tank is only 6 gallons. If this was set to moderate then you would use more water from the hot water tank then from the direct supply of cold. By making the hot water very hot, you are forced to temper it with adjusting the cold thereby making the adjusted water temperature last longer. this will give you a 7 minute warm shower rather than a 7 minute shower 100% from the hot water tank. I suggest it is designed that way to allow for the smaller hot water tank.

Thank you Bill from Georgetown. My father and I were both perplex over this one. His old Mallard has a six gallon tank, but it has an adjustable thermostat. What you say makes good sense.

Wow, I was wondering the same thing. Took our MXT 319 out for the first time this past weekend and the hot water was HOT!

I doubt that there are many hot water heaters with thermostats anymore. Haven't seen one in quite a while.

If your Suburban is a SW6P, there is a fitting on the gas controller, just above the burner tube, that sets the temperature. You'll need to push the retainer pin in to allow the adjuster to move. Usually, water heaters are preset for <120F. If the tank sensor is blocked or coated, it will not register correctly and the water temperature will be a little high. For safety, never set your water heater temperature above 120F.
