Hi! When winterizing last season, we had a bear of a time getting the anode rod out of the water heater. The threads were so rusted up that it wouldn't budge.
I'm looking at getting a new anode rod, but I heard that there's some tool that would help me clean the female threads on the water heater. The guy I was talking to called it a "chase", but I'm having trouble locating such a thing.
Anyone know what these are called and/or where to order or buy this and the anode rod from?
Thanks!

Use a 3/4 NPT pipe tap. linkYou need to be careful so that you don't cross thread. Run the tap in till it just starts to cut metal. Use Teflon tape on the threads and don't over tighten. Taps and anodes are available on eBay, usually for less money than elsewhere.

FYI, taps are "male" and "chases" are female. :-) Wonder what smart-a$$ thought those up... :-) Lyle

There are chasing heads that contain cutting tools called chasers and are usually used on automated lathes. The term "chasing a thread" came from the single point tool that cuts a thread and each additional pass chases the first till proper thread depth is reached.
