Our laminate has some swelling from water getting under around sink. I really, really, really hate that plastic sink and would like to replace both. A stainless sink for sure and I think I'd like a solid surface countertop, but I'm concerned about weight more than anything.
Has anyone done it or know what the weight difference is?

I wouldn't invest serious money in a very heavy countertop, just replace with like material and the sink of your choice. But this time, varnish the raw edges before placing the sink and also caulk under the sink edges. For those that still have no damage, you soon will so do the varnish and caulk before it is too late.

In the interim I would put a small bead of silicone seal around the sink to keep water out till you replace the sink You also might look into looking into buying a counter top from a RV junk yard, check for measurements of your counter top an call around for such. along with a sink you might be surprised at the cost to replace both... I would however get the hardware from your local home Depot or Ace Hardware so you don't have someone dirty old stuff Safe Travels Chuck

I think you better invest a good surface if you don't want things like that to bother you. There's really a big difference on having a solid surface, especially with their prices. do you have it replaced already?

Guess I would attack this different. Find a metal sink you like that a little bigger than the current. Remove the plastic sink, cut a bigger hole for the new sink. It it's an over the top edge, caulk under with plumbers puddy, set sink then seal the top edge with silicon from a caulk gun.
