I have a Durango 2500 and would like to know if I turn the AC on the refrigerator while driving the vehicle battery will run the device? We are going on our first trip next week and I'm nervous about driving and filling up with diesel using propane.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I'm guessing that you have an inverter to power the fridge and will use that to run the 120 volt power. You should know that the 12 volt power from the tow vehicle is rather weak unless modified with much heavier wiring. I wouldn't think twice about running the fridge on propane at a diesel pump, diesel fuel will not explode like gasoline. If there are gasoline pumps nearby it would be best to turn the fridge switch to off before pulling to the pump.

What Lynnmor said...and you better have a healthy battery bank, as you are going to be hard pressed to get your tow vehicle to provide enough amps to offset what the refrigerator is going to draw. The average vehicle nowadays has barely enough alternator capacity to take care of itself, with little to spare. If you are concerned, just pop into the coach and shut the refer off. Besides, it doesn't hurt to take a peek in there once in a while to make sure everything was properly secured.

We have a RV frig an it seems to keep things cooled while traveling from point to point without a problem ... I have forgotten to turn the frig off a few times an heard it come on during fueling, just went in a turned it off, no problem ... Some people leave there propane on all the time while traveling to keep their frig cold an never have a problem, I'm not one of them for the most part Safe travels Chuck

I never once thought about turning off the fridge while fueling (diesel). If you fuel at a dedicated diesel island, even less chances of a problem. Even more true when filling at stations that have vapor recovery systems; there just is no vapor to light off. I figure that there's a better chance of someone lighting off their gas at another pump with their cell phone than there is me setting something off with my fridge. Now =smokers= and morons who won't shut their cars down; that's another story, and I've nearly come to blows over that issue.

Hi. I believe that the cell phone/gas explosion theory has been disproven as an internet hoax. I personally never shut off the fridge. If the fumes in the air are that condensed that my fridge running 20 feet away from the pump will cause an issue, there's going to be an issue anyway. Breathing in those conditions would probably be difficult. If you see someone doing something stupid, hang up your pump and move on.

When I was younger, though, I =did= threaten to call the cops on a guy who wouldn't shut down his car and the attendant didn't seem to want to do anything. I also threatened the attendant that I'd hit the emergency button and shut the whole d@mn station down. A-hole finally shut his car down. I finished filling, left and called the station owner, who I'd happened to have met a couple times. He thanked me, schooled the attendant and we bought 10s of thousands of dollars more fuel from them over the years. :-) They =loved= it when I showed up with a 550 gal service wagon and put two nozzles in the filler neck =and= wrote them a good check. :-) Lyle

LOL, I remember the good old days when you fueled your car while smoking that Luck Strike or Camel Then there was the cell phone craze, that said your brain would fry or the gas pump would blow up while fueling your car, so then you couldn't smoke or talk on your phone while fueling Ugh What is the world coming to, I see people now all the time that can't put their phones down for one minute while driving (even if it's against the law), fill up with gas, shopping an you even hear them in the bathroom ... As far as shutting my car off while fueling I have a couple of times in my younger days not done so because if I did the car wouldn't start an I'd be stuck, I've even fueled tractors while they were running, was it smart, no, would I do it again, more than likely not

Having had 2 friends badly burned by fueling accidents (one died after 2 painful weeks), I'm religious about shutting engines down, at least with gas. Diesel, no problem. Same with smoking. We had one very lazy ex-employee who hated hooking up the gas return line when fueling a truck that ran on propane, and would just crack a gas valve to vent it. Was smoking while fueling one time and managed to light the vent off. While it didn't burn the truck up, it scorched it pretty good. Yes, I'm religious about smoking around fuel pumps, too, even more so than leaving an engine running. Lyle

Well Lyle Since I do not smoke any more an have not since 1994 after a 6 way bypass that is the least of my worries LOL ... But it seems that common sense dictates with both of these, but that is why you see labels on everything from soup to nuts an beyond because someone hurt themselves doing something they shouldn't have done Ugh !!! As stated prime example is at a gas pump the sign "NO SMOKING WHILE FUEL", who would have thought you could blow yourself up from the fumes Ugh !!! The other post was in jest, an I am sorry to here that your friend passed away, but the fact is again common sense comes into play as we get older not like we when we all were younger ... Some of things I done I should have died a hundred time over, would I do the same things today, not a chance LOL Safe Travels, glad to here your getting out an Glamping Chuck
