Hello, I have a 2010 Sportsman KZ 14RB that has built in electric brakes in the 7 pin round wiring adapter. I just purchased a new 2012 Tundra with a 4 pin adapter. I have been told I technically require an electric brake controller, my question, do I really need one or can I just purchase a 7 pin round to a 4 pin flat adapter as shown in the pic and pull the trailer without an electric brake controller? Thanks in advance for any and all help. Attachments:

I read the Florida State towing requirements and it stated that any trailer 3000 pounds and up require an electric brake. My trailer empty is 2200 lbs. Loaded with supplies I would guess as I haven't used it yet won't go over 2800 lbs with required supplies, blankets, pillows, dishware etc. Is this cutting it too close or should I just spend the $ 200 and have the electric brake controller installed. Honestly, if I don't have to spend the money I would rather not, however then there is the safety issue, is my life worth spending the money and going the safe route.

I would not worry about what is legal and start worring about saftey. If you ever need to do a panic stop and don't have trailer breaks you are going to have a big problem. Also if you do not use the trailer breaks you are going to fry your tow vehicle breaks in a very short time. Enjoy your trailer but do it safely--hook up the trailer breaks.

I could not agree with you more! Safety comes first, I am going to have the electric brake installed with the proper adapter, thanks for your reply!

Evidently I'm late to the party but your trailer already has electric brakes so all you need is an electric brake controller. I'd suggest a Tekonsha P2 or P3 and in checking the Tekonsha Website it tells us your Tundra is Plug 'n Play so you hardly need anyone to install anything ... just buy the appropriate 3040-P brake controller harness and plug it in ... done. I can't imagine why you'd pay someone to do this for you as it doesn't take but a few minutes for a complete brake controller installation when your vehicle already offers Plug 'n Play.

Thank you for all the advice. I had the electric brake controller installed and all is working great. Thanks for the tip on installing it myself, however, after watching the tech who installed the electric brake controller....I am ver happy I paid him to do it. As easy as you made it sound, unless you have experience doing these things, its better to leave it to someone who knows what they are doing, remember...safety first!
