I have a truck question... I think the trailer brake module is gone in our truck, but I'm not sure of the symptoms. All the lights work when we plug in but the truck screen says there is no brake when we step on the pedal. This is after weeks of a check trailer wiring message on the screen. It thought the camper was hooked up even when it wasn't, but no code came up at the dealership. They will replace the module but we leave to go camping tomorrow . Obviously we can't go without brakes!! Any suggestions or thoughts?

It would have been good if you told us what truck and trailer you have.
If the trailer wiring is defective, that would be the same as no trailer as far as the brake controller is concerned. Do an ohm reading on the trailer first thing. Etrailer has some good troubleshooting information on their website.

The truck is a 2015 silverado 3500 HD Duramax. I know it's not the trailer because the problem used to show up on the dash read out with no trailer attached. It started by thinking there WAS a trailer connected, but now with it attached it doesn't even register on the truck as being connected although the lights all work.
I need it fixed not only to go this weekend but we have a new durango 2500 340FLT on order and it's bigger and heavier than our current Flagstaff. It's the reason we got this truck

The trailer connector on the truck is an easy thing to replace, you might want to try that before swapping out the controller.

That's what they tried first. I guess I'll see what happens when they replace the module. Thanks

If you are using a adapter from a small trailer plug to a larger plug Ford an GM are different, GM has the brake on the center pin, Ford dozen't, thus you will get a reading similar to what you are taking about ... If you keep tying to us the wrong adapter plug you will blow your brake controller Ugh !!!!

No adapter. We used to pull it with a silverado all the time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's just the module. Seems GM puts it in a very vulnerable spot on the truck so living in western NY is the real problem.

The center pin can be used for backup lights. There are some variations in wire color and there is a commercial standard that is different. Some information

The new controller was installed, got it home and seemed to work activating the brakes many times. One time we shut the truck off, with the trailer still plugged and the same issue, only no brakes, either foot or manual. Pulled the 30 amp fuse ,(number 2) put fuse back in and so far so good.as long as the truck is running when we plug the trailer to the truck no problems. Tomorrow we willbe on our weekend getaway if there are no issues. BTW we have a 2015 Silverado 3500, with a Duramax,

It's the reason we got this truck I have a 2009 Silverado 3500HD (must be a GM thing) and periodically, without a trailer attached, it will give me the same message to "check trailer wiring". That will happen once or twice, then not happen again for 3 or 4 months, then it will do it again, then not happen for several months. I have not had time to check into it, but I always have brakes and lights on my trailers. Let me know what you find to be the problem.

You need to find a dealer that has a top notch wiring / electronics person. GM's seem to have some strange wiring configurations (not that the others don't have issues), as my neighbors ('13 2500 Dmax GMC) wonky dashboard was fixed by replacing the radio (?). My Monday morning quarterback guess is a ground has failed, next guess is a connection has gotten some moisture in it and developed some corrosion.

Some informationI'm not saying there is not a standard, what I am saying is the adapter plugs coming from a small plug to a large plug there is a difference, go to NAPA an look at adapters an you will see the difference right away ... Believe me there is a difference between adapters from Ford to GM, not only did I blow a brake controller in my Ford truck but so did my friend using a GM adapter by mistake, $350 later we both had new trailer brake controllers ... I did have lights but no brakes with the GM adapter Chuck

Keep one in the tool box first check when I have an issue, quickly tell Truck or Trailer.
