I finally was able to get my trailer out to "un-winterize" for the season. Everything went well (as far as I can tell) except I'm confused on the hot water heater by-pass.
I have a picture, but I can't figure out how to post it, so I'll have to describe:
There is the blue cold water inlet running horizontally along the bottom. Then the red hot water outlet runs horizontally along the top which is connected by a vertical blue cold water fill. At the top of that vertical line is the valve.
If the valve is in the vertical position, it diverts the water from going into the tank. That all makes sense. That must mean that when the valve is in the horizontal position, it closes the cold water line and forces the water to go into the tank and flows out the red line. Except it doesn't. Nothing comes out when I have that valve in the horizontal position. I messed around with it for a while and I found that if I put the valve in the 45 degree position, it seems to be the answer. I could hear water flowing into he hot water heater tank for a while (presumably until it was full).
So does that make sense for the valve ? Vertical opens up the by-pass, horizontal closes everything, and 45 degrees closes the by-pass and allows it to work as designed ?
I should have taken a picture when I winterized it so I would know. Lesson learned !

That doesn't sound right to me. I would think the valve needs to be horizontal to fill the water tank, and vertical to bypass the tank. I still visually prefer the 3 valve bypass, it makes more sense to me.
With the valve at 45 degrees, you will be allowing cold water to mix with your hot water resulting in warm water.
It's possible that you had a vapor lock in the tank when you put the valve horizontal? Did you turn a hot water tap on to assist in filling and moving the air out?

I did. I had the hot water faucet open. I also went out and and pulled open the pressure relief valve to see if that made any difference (it didn't....nothing happened).
What I did NOT do, however (now that I come to think of it) is to move it the the fully horizontal position after the tank was full. I'll have to check that next weekend.
