Hello Fellow 5'ers !
Well, have not been out here for awhile as I was busy getting house ready for sale. Been on the market as of yesterday for 15 days and SOLD! Yippee!! We can leave this sour stinky city by June 1!
Anyway, I am back to addon's before we head out and the Garmin is the 1st big one. So, I could not get much input on the traffic feature. I was told you needed a cell phone for interface in order for it to work, but someone said there was an antenna for traffic that you could by. I did find that offer on Amazon but could not get enough info on it. Does having the antenna do away with the need for the cell phone interface? Also, how well does the traffic feature work? Last question: What is the -S in the model name mean?
Regards Bob

Hi. On my Garmin RV760, there's no need for a cell phone or special antenna for traffic. It's all built into the unit. The traffic portion isn't super reliable because I think it depends on different criteria. If you go to www8.garmin.com/traffic/index.html, it says that traffic data comes from: Traffic alerts come from a traffic data collection system that analyzes traffic flow data collected from more than 2 billion observation points every month: - data from millions of Garmin device owners
- data from millions of cellular phone owners
- incident reports
- radio feeds of live information
- news stations
- historical traffic data from HERE Traffic Supply
- historical traffic data from Garmin device owners
- fixed traffic sensors on major roads giving extremely accurate traffic reports
Traffic data collected from more observation points, more often, helps your navigator find efficient driving routes for you.

Yes I have heard from others concerning the reliability and we are going to try to stay away from the big city mess when we can. I was just curious about the antenna and whether or not it does away with the need for the cell phone interface. I saw a 760 out there but they wanted $1000 bucks for it. What is the difference I wonder between the 2?
Thanks much for the traffic info and the link which I will read!

$1000? Holy cow. I can tell you I didn't spend anywhere near that much a couple years ago when I got it. Maybe it has become a collectors item?

On my 770 in the settings for traffic it has a box that will have a check if you have the antenna attached. There are 2 free subscriptions that are shown, but don't know how could they are. We've been on the road since December, and haven't gotten any reports from the traffic subscriptions - with or without the antenna.
Our unit cost about $399 online. I'm not sure who I got it from.
