Hi folks. Its been a crazy time here in PA - we lost our power last weekend for 72 hours, and then again yesterday twice for a period of hours, but the storms have passed and surely we are headed toward Spring! Winter in the Southwest in our fifth wheel is looking really great! Enough with the snow and ice already! Thank you so much for all of your responses from my last post. I read them all and shared them with the hubby. We've both been kind of amazed that we are back here at KZ again. We started talking about fulltime rving in retirement about 3 years ago. The first rv show we attended was in Oaks PA and the first fifth wheel we walked into was the Durango Gold FLF model. We loved the front living room but the kitchen had no pantry space and that was a deal breaker for me. So we moved on. Fast forward 3 years to today - many rv shows later - many rv lots later - many online searches later - and we had pretty well brought the possibilities down to Grand Design Solitude or Heartland Landmark, basically for floor plan and build quality. We really want to keep the length to 40 feet or under - we'd like to get into the national parks if possible. I said to my husband last week, "I wish we could find a bath and a half model under 40 feet. And I really like the steps on the far side of the unit. I'm just not settled yet. I'm going to look some more." So we went to the Oaks PA show this past weekend (why not - we had not power or heat at home and it was 40 degrees in our house!) and stopped to look at the KZ again. They didn't have any Durango gold there so I looked online, and lo and behold - a bath and a half under 40 feet. So I looked some more and really liked what I was reading so I decided to get on the owners forum and see what info I could find out about the KZ company. The hubby said, "Can you believe after 3 years we are back looking at the Durango model again?" God works in mysterious ways...
I appreciated your info on the company and the customer service. We haven't done any factory tours yet but reading horror stories about some of the manufacturing plants gives us pause as we prepare to put out a lot of money for a traveling home which will depreciate as we drive it off the dealer's lot. And it sounds like the rallies are great fun and a time to see the KZ reps and work out any problems or issues.
My question about dealerships in PA and spadoctor2's response was also a blessing. We are in Media PA outside of Phila. Family Camping Center in Pottstown is the closest dealer to us here, but we have vacationed for many years at a friend's mountain house in Orson, PA which is just northwest of Honesdale. We are headed up there for a week at the end of April, and C Neer RV is only 15 miles from the mountain house! So I will give them a call and see if we can make a visit there - hopefully they will have at least one of the models for us to look at....
Thanks for all the info on both models which I like - the 366 and the 384. I've always liked the idea of the bath and a half, and I like the big bathroom in the front with the double sinks. However, I have always said I don't want to climb in the closet to do the laundry. I also really like the floorplan of the 384 with steps on the far side of the unit and the entry between the table and living room area. The 384 also has lots more kitchen storage space than the 366 does.....so hard to choose....they both have their pluses...glad to hear that you can get to the bathroom and bedroom in both models while traveling.
So now for a few more questions. Does anybody have the dishwasher? I can't decide between having the convenience of it, or having the storage space. I use it all the time now, but do I need it when we are traveling or do I need the space more?
I don't want either the standard aluminum steps or the MorRyde steps. I don't want that dirt coming in my unit every time we close it up. What I really want are the Torklift Glow Steps. Will KZ install those for us, or do we have to do that ourselves after the purchase?
Is there any option for a table and chairs which are not black? I love the light colors of the Travertine and would love to have a lighter table and chairs to match. If there isn't any lighter option, can you order a unit without the table and chairs and install your own? Is the living room furniture Thomas Payne? If not, is it comfortable or have you replaced it?
We have decided to buy the 3500/350 diesel dually either Ram or Ford. Don't know whether we need a long bed or not...any opinions?
And this may be the deal breaker question, at least for my husband. Every unit we look at, I go inside to check out the floorplan and he climbs underneath the unit to check out the underbelly. I might love the interior and the floorplan, but if he doesn't like what he sees I can kiss that unit goodbye. He has shown me photos of the underbellies of Jayco Pinnacles, Coachmen Chapparrel, Open Range, and others which are really a sorry sight. Where the side wall meets the underside (I think I'm saying that correctly!) there are great gaps between screws where he can literally reach his hand up in there. We are both thinking this would be a great place for water, bugs, rodents, etc. to find their way into the unit. On both the Grand Design and the Heartland, the underbelly is completely enclosed and done in such a way that there are no open spaces to be found. I hope I am describing it correctly so that you can understand my question. What does the underbelly look like on the Durango Gold units? If my hubby climbs under there and sees the mess he saw on the Jayco Pinnacle, we will be sad campers! And I'll be looking again
My husband will be retiring from fulltime ministry later this year, and we will be making our purchase then. Maybe some temporary pastoring or supply preaching while on the road, but mostly flyfishing and hiking and enjoying the great outdoors. We are so appreciative of all of the info you are giving us. Thanks again!
