I'm heading to Townsend TN this spring. I'm coming from Arkansas. Is highway 321 into Townsend very bad topull a camper. Looking at google maps don't look like the road is steep but I can't tell. I was wanting to stay Cherokee NC but that road looks ruff.

Townsend is on the "Quiet" side of the GSMP. You will love it. The road into Townsend is good. Only a short section of two-lane. Other than that, it is four-lane, divided most of the way in from the Maryville, TN area. When you come out of the two-lane section, the Townsend Police enjoy sitting on the right side of the road (look for the port-a-lets, and you'll usually see the police) shooting (radar) vehicles coming into town where the speed limit drops. I think they make a good chunk of their annual revenue off of the tourist that come into Townsend right there. If you plan on taking 321 on into Wear's Valley/Pigeon Forge, I would think twice. There are a couple of severe switchbacks on that road which are manageable (swinging WAY wide into oncoming traffic) but a pain in the backside. The road is narrow, steep in portions and, as mentioned, severe in spots, especially when pulling a trailer/camper.
We live in Maryville and use 321 to get into the GSMP when we camp at Cades Cove or Elkmont. Enjoy your trip, and East Tennessee in Spring.

Townsend is a really pretty area. We have travels over there several times when in the Gatlinburg area. Can't add to the info. above about travel...seems Crazy Greg has great info. living in the area. If you are in the GSMP take the Cades Cove Loop, it is well worth the time...beautiful any time of the year but Spring is very nice. It is a slow loop so plan some time. Also the Roaring Forks area, if the is open (it is seasonal), really enjoyed the scenery. We take these 2 loops every time we get there...we never tire of the beauty. Heads up...the Pigeon Forge area is a traffic nightmare most weekends of the year...manageable during the week...plan your trip wisely. Weekends are busy for the Gatlinburg area and Cades Cove and Roaring Forks loops too. We are week-day tourist when in the area...leave the area on Saturday morning or just stay at camp for the weekend.
