Now that the summer season is in the rear-view mirror, I know that many of us turn our attention to hunting. I, myself hunt. I pulled a tag for a female mule deer and a female pronghorn antelope. along Colorado's beautiful High Plains. I look at it as an opportunity to "fill the freezer" and provide the family with clean, lean meat for the upcoming year. I was just wondering if any of you do the same and what regions you might hunt in? *DISCLAIMER* - I kill it, I grill it. No animals were harmed in the posting of this thread

I had a couple of friends that tried to make a hunter out of me several years back, but it did not work. I'm not a hunter at all.

rvdude The Deer in Texas aren't big enough, they all seem to be the size of Bambi LOL, use to hunt allot, still have shotguns have at least one squirrel gun (Winchester 22) but they are all in Ohio at my sons place now ... I borrowed a 20 gauge from a friend out here to shoot crows because they were damaging our house screens. Between the neighbors an I it was open season on crow's. The problem being they could hear you cock the gun in the house an would disappear pronto ... Neighbor gal got smart an kept her shotgun cocked an loaded near there back door, she racked up about five total, I got two, Bald Eagles we have around here got a few an now we do not have a crow problem only moles Ugh Out at the farm I owned we had a herd of Elk an Deer, Elk herd numbers about 30 or more an would mix in with the horse's in the field all the time... At our new house we have a herd of deer numbering about 20 or so, they are so tame that they will stand in the road or driveway an look at you as to say what the &^& are you doing here LOL ... Back at the farm you could shot at deer an Elk but here unless they are on the backside of our property if you shoot you might hit the next doors neighbors house or a car passing by on the main road It's no fun when the game stand at your door an look at you, DW gets mad because they eat all of her rose's, so now she plant's them in the 8ft fenced in back yard Chuck

We are hunters here in Montana. Just got back from eight days camping in the wall tent and using our horses. No luck so far but was 65. Way to warm. Heading back out later this week but taking rv this time. Won't use water or toilets since we have already winterized. By the way both me and my hubby hunt. Mostly for elk some deer. Good luck to everyone.

We have one town going out US12 toward the mountains that there are so many Elk that had to put cross walks in so people wouldn't run over them, adds a new meaning to watch for Elk, heck you can't miss them there is so many ... They are smart, they know you can't shoot them in town so they hang out there, we went thought that town a month ago, DW counted over 30 thought town which is only about three miles long throw there ... We counted 10 deer the other day in the hay field across the road from us, someone hits a deer about every few months crossing the road from one hay field to another around us ... The backside of our property backs up to a 20 acre field, the deer cross over between that field an the one across the street, as well eat the Apples off the neighbors tree, they are fat an happy I have to tell you an they are not dummies that's for sure LOL Safe Travels Chuck & Hildi

Some of them I even believe are becoming domesticated darn near. Elk is good eating, but I don't know anyone with property in the mountains, so I stick to the plains and deer. They eat well and it's lean, healthy meat.

doublewa I have been to Estes Park, was a speaker on digital communications over high frequency at the hotel up on the hill, can't remember the name of the hotel now Ugh ... Thing I remember is that the parking lot always to be up hill no matter which way I went LOL.... Also living 500ft above sea level I was out of breath a few times while walking an thought I was having problems till the DW told me on the phone that it was because I was not use to being up that high in the mountains Ugh ... I have had Elk, deer, moose at the local game dinners but only hunted for small game Safe travels Chuck

Sounds like it. That's the hotel where Steven King wrote IT. They will give you a EKG machine when you rent a room so you can check for ghosts. My in-laws did it on Halloween one year.

One of the things I remember as a younger a man(hundred years ago) driving thought the UP of Michigan an seeing hundreds of deer in the corn fields after dark, herds were very large... Coming up I-15 just before I-40 in Colorado there are so many Elk they have 10ft fences along the roads so they will not cross I-15. Every time I drove thought that area I saw either a truck or a car busted up from hitting an Elk... In western PA I would see the same thing only Deer, seems like every day I drove across I-80 in the 70es there was a car or truck with the front end all messed up from hitting one... Good thing about PA was that if the accident just happened an the deer was fresh they would cart it off to a place, cut it up, send the deer meat to rest homes close by, pretty cool Safe travels Chuck

Chuck,
Colorado DPW will allow you to donate game meat to homeless shelters and such (once it passes a CWD test of course). Kinda the same with road kill. If you hit a deer, you just call DPW or the State Patrol and they will let you take the carcass legally once they determine it was an accident and not poaching. Now, I know that might sound kinda bad, but I've hit a few deer in NJ where a good portion of the animal was still in excellent shape. With the size of the Mule Deer out here, that means A LOT.
