I currently have a 05 envoy with the 5.3 it pulls good but I'm in flat land. I'm wanting to go out west to the rockys. My question is am looking at buying a 04 expedition with the 5.4 and a heavy towing package. Has anyone towed with one. Do they do ok.

I wouldn't be happy with either tow vehicle pulling a trailer like yours. Pushing things to the limit makes for a tiring trip. Consider a 3/4 ton truck with a larger engine.

So mountain passed out here are 10 miles long or longer with a 7 percent grade, a 3/4ton truck is almost a must in the Rockies or other mountain ranges with a heavy TT or 5th wheel I will add something here, you may be able to barely pull the grade's but going down the other side is another story as well , also you have to look at your stopping power as well in an emergency. Remember you are not the only person on the HWY an safety is a major factor when pulling your trailer for not only for you but others around you Safe Travels Chuck

I have had a '10 F150 with a 5.4 and an '11 F150 with the 5.0, the '11 is head and shoulders above the 5.4, but it's still a 1/2 ton with all it's limitations. Unless you have a small rig, you are going to need a 3/4 ton.

You're going to want to go with a 3/4 at a minimum depending on what you are towing. As a general rule, if you're going through the Rockies, you want to have much more truck than you need. As Chuck mentioned, you have to be ready for an emergency stop at any time and with how swift the weather changes in the Rockies (every 10 minutes), you could hit rain one mile, wind the next, then snow the next.
My buddy pulls a 29' Ragn' bumper pull toy hauler that's about 12k completely loaded with a 8.0 2500 Chevy w/ airbags and he has a chore of a time with it. His 2500 and my 3500 diesel are night and day. Both will do the job, but my truck is more than what I need and it works out well going into the mountains. There's no such thing as overkill in that regard.

Thanks for all the advice I'll stay east of the rockys there's plenty to see here. If I go that way I'll stay in a cabin. I ended up with a 99 Navigator with the heavy towing it has transmission and oil cooler.
