It never does. I went through defensive driving when I was in the military and I used to drive 10 ton trucks. I use the safe driving philosophies for winter driving that I do for pulling weight. One thing I always try to do is give myself a safe distance from the vehicle in front of me. Unfortunately, cars think that space is for them to switch lanes.
In some areas of the country, you are responsible for your front end, so even if you leave a distance and someone goes into that distance and you rear end them, it's your fault. That still boggles my mind.
