The DW and I live in NE Ohio and winter in Arcadia Florida. We normally go I77 south to I26 east to I95 south to I10 west to US301 south to I75 south to FL70 east. This is a nice route with little traffic but the mountains through WVA and VA can be a little troublesome with their crosswinds.
We have gone I71 south to I75 which uses less fuel but takes longer and the traffic is terrible especially around Atlanta and there are very few rest areas on this route.
Has anyone used I65 south between Louisville KY and Montgomery AL. then US231 south to I10 east to I75 south. What is the traffic like is it flat or rolling hills or mountainous, are there lots of rest areas. I have never been through Nashville or Birmingham or Montgomery. Obviously Nashville is the home of Country Music and there should be lots to see and do but what about Birmingham and Montgomery, nice places or should I avoid them??
Or should I travel the route that I have been going for years.
Opinions please

In my travels thought those cities Nashville had allot of traffic, Birmingham, and Montgomery were not bad depending on the time of day ...
I do not remember to much about the rest areas and there seem to be pretty flat into Nashville with rolling hills. Same type of roads between Louisville KY and Montgomery AL, nothing that I remember being any type of major hills or what some call mountains back there that I can remember ...
But I am sure there are people who travel those routes more than me in the last few years, I was in both Montgomery an Birmingham AL last but in a car and daughter was driving last year.
Safe Travels

One route I'm looking at to get to Shipshewana would take me through Nashville up into Kentucky to the Mammoth Cave area. If I go through Nashville, I will be able to report on that area for you.

My in-laws like to go east on PA turnpike to bypass the WV mountains. They end up cutting south and running 95 down most of the way. I'm not sure where they cut south, I'd have to check if you're interested.

Thanks johnr,
I have gone that way also when the DW and I lived in Pittsburgh.
Pa. Turnpike east (I76) to Breezewood then I70 east to Hancock MD. then US 522 east to I81 south (Winchester VA.) to US17 south through Warrenton VA. to I95 in Fredericksburg VA to avoid D.C.. Been that way many times still too much traffic for me.
I77 is a great route easy driving low traffic volume and plenty of rest areas it is just Bluefield and Big Walker, the cross winds there can be very bad and they catch you off guard coming out of the tunnels. I'm savvy to them now but still don't like it.
I75 route uses less fuel but is so congested with traffic especially around Atlanta ( you can go through or around but will be in a traffic jam except for about 2am) and into Florida I avoid as much of it as possible.
So I was never down I65 and was just wondering.
I realize there will be no "best" way.

Wish I could help but when I open the US Road Atlas I try to stay to the left of the staples.

Wish I could help but when I open the US Road Atlas I try to stay to the left of the staples. LOL, that's pretty funny and I almost always stay on the right side.

For ring binders you have to stay to the bottom... that gets you back to Texas where you want to be...

I go to the right only for Branson, then back to my side of the book, been a left coaster since I got out of the service way too many years ago.

We take I-22/US78 just outside Memphis and pick up I-65 at Birmingham south to Montgomery. I-65 is Hilly through Birmingham but levels out about halfway to Montgomery. US 231 is 4 lane all the way to I-10, but there are a lot of traffic lights in between. Depending on the time of day, Dothan Alabama can be congested. I-10 going east from US 231 to I-75 is good, again, depending time of day, Tallahassee can be congested. Another alternative is I-65 to Birmingham to I -20 to Atlanta, I-285 south to I-75. This bypasses downtown Atlanta.

This seems to be the least congested of any route that I have traveled from NE Ohio to Arcadia Florida.
