Well, as the rally will be my first major long trip, I have a question. It will be about 1200 miles each way for me and I was planning on doing three days of approximately 400 miles each. I was talking to somebody at the campground while I was out the last few days and they said I might want to make it 300 miles each day. So, my question is about how far do you guys drive each day on long trips?

When I went from Colorado to Alabama a couple years ago, I usually tried to get in 400 miles. That required a couple stops for fuel, which usually was a good time to get out and stretch the legs, etc.

That's what I was thinking. I don't know why that person told me 300. It would take forever to get anywhere at that rate. Thanks for the reply.

I'm another 300 a day. After 10-12K a month I'm in no hurry, and that was my second retirement.

rvdude We do about 325 to 350 a day no more than that, the DW likes to sleep in some mornings and if we like the camp ground we may stay an extra day and do some site seeing But some days we may only do 300 depending on the weather, when I retired from driving over the road I was doing 500 to 550 a day. So it's not that I can't do it, it's the DW saying we no longer are hauling freight to the East coast and return any more, lets see the site's not fly by them Chuck

Thanks for the inputs. I have been leaning toward the 400 each day. That gets me from home to Hot Springs AR, then to St Louis MO, then to Shipshewana, all approx. 400 miles with a couple of days at each stop. But I'm still trying to figure out what to see and do along the way, so who knows?

350 is about where I start getting tired, so 400 is not out of range with the RV. If we're just in a car, I can go much further. I guess I worry more about everything around me when traveling with the RV.

rvdude,
Driving with a trailer in tow can be very stressful. so it all depends on you, the terrain the weather the traffic. There are a lot of variables. You are traveling from Texas to Indiana and I don't know how much time you have but you want to make it enjoyable and be safe. Only you can say what your limit is.
Did you read my post under Cracker Barrel?? We travel to Florida every winter have been doing it for about 10 years with a trailer in tow and we have tried different routes but for the most part have traveled the same route about 6 times so we know it pretty well. When we leave NE Ohio we are pretty excited and want to get to Florida ASAP. I have done that 1150 mile trip in as little as 23 hours (not any more) but usually 2 days down and 3 days back.
Going down we start about 7am and drive to about noon that takes me around 350 miles into W.Va. and my second tank of fuel and lunch. From there it's my second stretch of driving about 500 miles into Georgia and dinner and overnight at Cracker Barrel. On day 2 we get something light at Cracker Barrel for breakfast and we are gone by 8am for another 5 hours about 300 miles to the RV park.
On the way back we break it into 3 days, RV park to the Cracker Barrel in Georgia, Georgia to W.Va. and finally W.Va. to home.
Weather also plays a part in how long it takes. In the fall it is usually clear the whole trip down but in the spring coming back it is almost always raining and nothing is worse than towing a trailer in the rain it can really fatigue you.
As The DW and I get older we are tending to slow down and enjoy the drive more and I think this coming fall we may take a new route and spend a week or so on the road.
Just remember only you can set you driving limit, once you even start to feel fatigued it's time to pull it over and call it a day.

For us 300-400 per day is definitely more comfortable. Usually our vacation schedule doesn't allow for that though. Last summer we did 600-650 per travel day. Central Colorado to Billings, Montana on day one. Pulled out of the driveway at 3am. Billings to Glacier National Park the next day. Stayed there a few days then Glacier to Banff in one day. Driving back from Banff we stopped in the Lewis and Clark National forest - long day driving - I was beat. The next day we drove to Yellowstone and stayed there 5 days before driving back to central Colorado in one day. We stop every 200 miles or so for fuel and rest breaks because the TV only holds 26 gallons of fuel. It was certainly a long trip - two weeks. For us it was the trip of a lifetime so it made the long days worth it so we could stay in our destinations longer. If we'd had more time we wouldn't have driven less, we would have stayed put longer in the parks. Good luck and have fun. As jetzen said, when you get tired it's ok to stop. Can't find the source online now but I've heard that driving tired is as dangerous as driving drunk. Our frequent stops are the only thing that keeps me going.

What we do is ask at the camp grounds where we stay what's there to see in the area, also most all the camp grounds we have stay at have leaflets talking about stuff in the area you are at ...
The DW likes quilting so I believe she knows every quilt shop within 2000 miles LOL, so she sort of likes the routes that goes by some of the quilt stores she wants to visit. We watch food network allot an one of the shows is Dinners, Drive-Inns and Dives, the host has a book out of places he has been, so we have that book and if close by one of the places he has been we will go eat there just to see if it's as good as he has stated on TV. Mind you my wife is a real picky eater, a bunch of our friends ask if we have been to a eatery and ask if it has the Hildi seal of approval on it, if not they will not go there LOL
So explore when you stop, there are tons of cool stuff all over the county, like I said I drove truck 48 states and passed by tons of place but never got to stop because time was money, now i remember a bunch of them I saw and we now have the time to stop and see them.
On that sticks out is Wall Drug, I passed by Wall Drug a few hundred time on I-90, alwasy thought it was a small building from what I could see from the interstate, two years ago on our way to a tractor show in SD. we stopped. I was shocked, in no way it's a small building, it very large building and you can get lost inside, so it just goes to show you that exploring leads to some great stuff if you just look LOL ...
Safe travels see you at the Rally

Thanks for all the input. My first day of vacation is Sunday before the rally and I will have to be back at work (ugh...) on the Saturday after the rally. I figure doing 400 will give me a little break between each driving day and a little time to see the area before heading out again. I'll do 400 the first day and see how that works and adjust downward as needed. See everybody there...

I did 250 miles with the trailer today with no problem, so I believe I'll be good with 400 miles per day going to Indiana.

I took the first break after 2 1/2 hours and 150 miles. I was a little "bowlegged" when I first got out of the truck, but that didn't last but a few seconds. I have to repeat that trip Friday to go back home... guess that is just getting me in practice for next month.

My father had a great saying, I use to laugh when he said it, "It's hell to get old I wish I'd hurry up and get there" I know now what he meant Ugh

This does take some planning and lots of google searching. I just finished up on kids senior camping trip. Ten states plus Canada round trip 3800 miles. I can say on first day of trip we did 8 hr and 611 miles Alot of factors to account for ( age , bringing animals , eating , fuel , weather , traffic - morning. lunch. 5o'clock. wrecks )
Is truck gas or diesel? I put external diesel tank. That lets me travel a good 6 hrs before I need to find fuel.. Know how many hours you wish to drive and google map where your location will be. I like the Pilot/Flying J's RV friendly, Walmart call before you stay, Lowes. If its still daylight have to plan where to park out of way. Only my opinion I like to travel till dark.
Take into account the time you will be calling it ENOUGH DRIVING FOR TODAY.
If possible have co-pilot looking at whats ahead for stopping points..
SAFE TRAVELS

It will only be the 3 of us (me, myself, and I) so there won't be a co-pilot. I think 400-450 will be about right for me. That will give me about 2 days at each stop. I do have a diesel truck with no extra fuel tank, so I'll be stopping fairly often, which I don't mind. That gives me a chance to walk around, go to the restroom, etc. anyway, thanks for the input. One of these days when I start traveling more, I will definitely add an auxiliary fuel tank.

I remember back in my younger days the ol boys would say just wait till you get my age, all the aches and pains, right, I didn't believe it, well now I do, im only 59 and getting out of rigs or equiptment after along time in the seat and hitting the ground, ouch, but I walk it off in a few seconds, I usually travel about 400 a day, usually not in a hurry to get anywhere, try to relax as much as possible when driving, Happy Campin
