Just ran across a great deal on a F350 with the 6.0 diesel, any one here pulling a 5W with a 6.0? If so how is it for power in mountains & what kind of fuel mileage? The 6.0 is a crew cab and the 7.3 extended both long beds. Starting to think it's time to retire the 7.3 to a backup even though it runs perfect & the body looks new, I'm liking the added room of the crew cab. The good or bad on the 6.0.

Edd505 We have a 6.0 on a 2005 F350 DWD 4x4 CC LB, the 6.0 had some problems such as small head bolts that stretched and weak head gaskets along with oil cooler problems in the earlier 6.0's (2003 to 2005) ... Even thought our truck had only 125k on it and ran just fine we decided since we more than likely would not buy another truck to have what is called bullet proofed the engine ... So this past winter we had ours gone thought, new (better)head bolts, new head gasket's, changed out oil cooler to a better brand (after market from Ford), new side and pain gaskets, I also added a performance chip, total of over 8K from Ford Dealer, ($500 from after market dealer for chip) ... We went from around 14mpg to 18mpg without the 5th wheel, I saw 10mpg, 12mpg in the mountains on 6 percent grade on one short trip now but has better performance overall ... I believe that the 6.0 is a good engine but with the long mountain grades we pull out here I thought it smart to do all the work since the new trailer weighted 4k more than the old one. Mind you it pulled just fine the couple of trips we had it out but lacked a little power on the smaller short grades. Once we did the upgrade/bullet proof it was like a new truck, we pushed one of our camping buddies up a 4 mile 6 percent grade at 60mpg and he only had a 30ft TT with a new ford 350 gas job... So i will say that if you can get a 2006 or 7 or newer 6.0 at a good price I'd go for it, but the 7.3 that you have is a great engine as well. We like the crew cab because of the grand kids and of course our to dogs one of which is 165pd Great Dane which takes up the back seat for the most part LOL Safe Travels & Don't forget about the Kz Rally this Summer Chuck

The 6.0 has a terrible reputation and should not be considered unless it can be bought cheaply AND you are willing to do the bullet-proofing mentioned above. Expect the modifications to cost roughly $5,000.

When I was looking for my truck (in 2012), my mechanic and a few other people said to steer clear of the Fords because they were having trouble with them. He didn't elaborate as to why, but I've gone to him for years and he is always honest. He did say if Ford still made the 7.3, that would be the one.

I agree, the 7.3 had better head bolts than the 6.0 and was a better engine, they both were International (IH) engines made for ford up to 2008/9 I believe, after that Ford made their own which is in their trucks today... Like I said I paid a little over 8k to have my 6.0 bullet proofed an another $500 for a chip, of course this price may very in parts of the county, the Ford Dealer I had my work done at charges $120 an hour ... I forgot to add above I also had a new water pump, new fan belt, new hose's and the turbo cleaned and new bearings put in it even thought it didn't need new bearing. As I said above the also changed the side cover gaskets and oil pan gaskets, re-done both heads with new valves and valve seats and springs, milled 100 thousands off the head as well ... At one time I was told that they had to take the body/cab off the truck to work on the engine, this is not true, they did pull the complete front grill and section of the truck leaving the finders and hood on when the pulled the engine and trans ... But as I said above it has made a world of difference, it's like a new truck in an old body Safe Travels & Don't forget about the Kz Rally this Summer Chuck

johnr Believe it, I as well was surprised, but as I said the complete front nose of the truck was off bumper an all when I saw the engine sitting out on a engine stand. Now that is to say they may have taken the hood off, taken the engine out and put the hood back on to save room while they worked on the engine. I was not there when they pulled the engine, all I saw was it out an then when it was back in a few days later, both times the hood was on Chuck

Ford went thru a tough time with International engines ... they began building their own diesel in 2011. The Ford 6.7 liter is a good engine. They went thru the predictable early growing pains but now have it sorted out. Beginning with 2015, they added an improved engine exhaust brake and if I was buying a Ford, I'd get a 2015 or newer. I'd say that NOW all 3 of the big 3 have comparable trucks. You will find Fan Boys but honestly, all of them are very good ... now.

I have to say who would have thought 40 years ago that you would be able to pull a 40ft trailer or longer with a pickup truck. As well the engine in a pickup would have more power to the wheels than my 1st over the road semi truck ....
