I have one of those "strange" questions about the electrical system in my 2015 MXT 319 toyhauler. When I have the trailer at home (which I keep plugged in to a normal 110 outlet all of the time with the refrigerator on), the refrigerator light will work just fine. I took the trailer out last week for 4 days, and then again this week for 5 days. While I am plugged in to 50 amp service, the refrigerator light will not work, but it is fine when I get the trailer back home. Anybody ever heard of a situation like this?
As for my satellite not working (previous thread) I still haven't figured that out yet. But if DirecTV keeps hiking their prices as they have been lately, it may no longer be a problem as I may tell them what they can do with their service and just sell my winegard carryout dish...

Does anybody think that my problem with the refrigerator light could be the start of or an indicator of a potentially greater electrical problem?

It almost sounds as if when you out away from home that possibly one leg of the 50amp service is either weak or not at all at the camp sites. As you going to the same camp ground each time you have been out ...
Then when you come home you have both legs of your 50amp service, have you tried both your Air Conditioners while camping, this may tell the tail as to if one of the 50amp legs is weak or not at all real fast ...
Why I say try the A/C is that while you are hooked to the 50amp service your not using it, in fact you could run on the 30amp service if you needed to. But once you start both those A/C's now you are going to need every part of the 50amp service. So you will find out real fast if both A/C's will not work if the camp grounds 50amp is weak or not at all, then you will know that the camp ground has a problem on leg of their 50amp service ....

Yes, I was at the same campground both times. I was in different sections of the park quite aways from each other. As for the ac's... this is Texas, and you can bet I was running both ac's the first couple of days. As it was not super hot yet, I went down to only the front ac. The refrigerator light didn't work with one ac or two ac's running.

Ok rvdude
Yes I know well about S Texas since I moved from there in 1981, trying to go back since then but my now DW has her feet planted in Washington State where it rains 200 days a year in one form or another Ugh ....
I still think there is one leg of the electrical system that is not right in that camp ground, check your voltages at home and then check the voltages at the camp ground, I'd bet a dime to a dollar they are far different ....

Thanks. I'll give that a try when I get the time to mess with it. I've been in Southeast Texas for 56 years now... never lived anywhere else. You need to bring her back down here for a visit, then keep extending it. She'll realize what she is missing!

Keep in touch with me... I'll let you know when it's raining here, then you can bring her here while it is raining. Except for the 100+ degree temps and high humidity, she'll think she is in Seattle and want to stay.

LOL rvdude Well we are about 85/90 miles south of Seattle, they have major traffic jams with cars, we have major traffic jams with cows crossing the road LOL... They have hundreds if not thousands of traffic lights, we have one stop light with 5 stop signs We have the smell of a different kind of money, it's brown an looks like a pie when dropped from the back side of a cow LOL safe travels Chuck

Try taking the outside cover off at the fridge. There'll be a 120 volt receptacle in there and check to see if there is 120 volts when at home and when at the campsite. If plugged into 50 amps, both legs should be hot and you could remove the cover from the panel and use a voltmeter to test for presence of 120 volts on each leg. What are you plugged into at home - 120 volts/15 amps with adapter or do you have a 50 amp recept? Does the fridge work fine at the campsite and at home if on propane versus electrical? The fridge has a 300 watt element that runs on 120 volts so if you turn the propane off and fridge cools okay but the light is off, then there has to be something else going on. Electrical stuff can be the hardest thing to diagnose 'cuz you just can't see, touch, smell or taste them stupid little electrons...
Rain you say? We've had the 3rd highest rainfall on record in April here in southwest BC. I'd gladly move to a southern state anytime about now.

Thanks for the info. I will give that a try when I get some spare time. At home I have a 50 to 110 adapter on the trailer with a 6 ft. extension cord plugged into a regular 110 receptacle. The refrigerator works fine at the campsites and at home, just without the light while camping.

Gil
I'm only a few hundred miles south of you in Washington and your right we had the most rain fall in many many years, over 55 inches in 30 days, sun has come out for a few days and it back to rain Thursday for a few more days ... As I have always said you have to wait to after the middle of July for it to stop and then it starts 1st of Oct. Ugh

Here's a little update on this problem. I haven't had time to really pursue it, and I am also "electrically challenged", but I did look at the plug outside behind the refr as myredracer suggested. Of course, they put the plug in facing toward the refr where you cannot see it. Anyway, I went out with the trailer on Sunday to a different campground than the previous 2 trips. When I got here I hooked up to the 50 amp service, turned on both ac's, put the water heater on electric, and of course the refrigerator was on. I opened the refrigerator and the light was on and was on for several refr door openings. So, I am thinking that it is the campground. After a while, there was no light. Power went out this morning for most of the day (not good in hot Texas) and when we got the power back, the light was working for a while. Then it stopped working again. So now I'm thinking there may be a short in the refr light wiring. Sounds like a good thing for the KZ guys at the rally.

Well rvdude Like myredracer said, those little electrons are at time hard to trace, seems strange that it was working the whole time you had power at the camp ground until it went out, then after it came back on for a short while. I'm still thinking it was the camp grounds, they may have lost a leg of their power grid if the light works at home on 30amps an not on a camp ground 50 amp something is amiss here ... AS you said good question for the Techs at the Kz Rally Safe travels were out camping on the Oregon Coast starting Tomorrow Chuck

Yeah... I think I have a ghost. Actually it was on when I got there Sunday for a while, then it went out and stayed out until the power went out early Tuesday morning. After the power came back on Tuesday afternoon, it worked immediately and for a little while, then went out again. Who knows... if there is going to be something weird going on, it's usually going to be happening to me!!!

Can you see the switch on the refrigerator it may not be shutting properly of bad switch if you can not see it its probably a hall effect sensor for the door switch and its misaligned or bad.
