I am getting a strong odor inside the trailer that is troublesome. I believe it may be coming from the gray water tank. I have tried cleaning the tank with Dawn dish soap, using 8 gallons of warm water and then driving around to slosh it throughout the tank. The smell still persists, though maybe slightly less. I have not tried bleach as someone had previously suggested. However, could the problem be due to a faulty vent valve under the sink? I was told by a local RV service tech that there is a valve before the P trap that allows air to enter the gray water tank but won't allow any odors to escape, but if the valve is faulty it could be allowing those smell to leak inside the trailer. Unfortunately, the valve assembly was installed before the sink and countertop were installed and cannot be removed for inspection without taking the sink countertop off. It could be costly to remove the sink countertop, so am reluctant to try it unless there is no other way to access that valve. Has anyone heard of similar smell problems and done anything to correct them? Thanks.

I replaced my valve because of a noxious odor from the kitchen sink. It was not considered an air admittance valve, it was called something else. I forget what it was called, I'm sorry. It was located in the same area at Home Depot. It's smaller than an AAV.
It was an extremely tight fit and I had to bend (as carefully as possible) the pvc away from the sink to get clearance to unscrew the valve and replace it. I would not want to remove the sink either just for a possibility.
If you really can't get to it, have you tried taking your p-trap apart and seeing if it could use a good cleaning?

Thanks! A couple of good suggestions. Did you get that valve at Home Depot?

Yes I did get it at Home Depot. I went first and bought an AAV and then tried to do the work. The AAV was way too big. I took the valve from the camper and went back and they were right next to the Air Admittance Valves on the shelf.

Thanks again! Will try getting the valve off first!

I have a similar problem but mine is after we have been on the road. I think the water works it way out of the trap...if I put a cup or two of water down the trap it seems to take care of it until we are on the road again....shower does the same thing.

We travel with all vents and windows closed and haven't had a problem. You might have something open that allows a positive air pressure to build pushing water out of the traps.

Thanks Lynn for that hint....we usually have the roof vents open somewhat. Since we installed the covers it was easy to forget they are open. I will try to remember to close them and see if that helps.
