Hi All;
Does anyone know if there is a standard clearance height for the overhead canopy at service stations ? And what that height is ?
Thanks Mark

I have never seen a standard height at a service station that serves cars. Be careful. At facilities for 18 wheelers normally are 13 ft or higher. On the road with my 5th wheel, I use truck stops to avoid the issue.

Thanks for the reply. I agree, I've never heard of a standard either and have asked at a couple service stations what the height of their canopies are ... They didn't know. Good suggestion to use the truck stops

I use truck stops whenever possible and I have only have a 16RBT. They have more room to maneuver and I don't have to worry about steep driveway aprons where I bottom out.

Most of the large chain fuel stations do have their own standards, and they are plenty high.

Thanks, yes, the stations I have used have plenty of clearance. I just got curious about a standard after watching a you tube video of a truck and 5th wheel knock over a canopy and almost crush the cab of the truck.

Another point that comes to mind is that we all should measure and know (or write it down were it it visible to the driver) the height of your rig. A 5'r with a height of 13' won't fit under a 11' viaduct.

That's a very good point ... So, being this is my first truck and 5th wheel ... Question ... Does the advertised brochure height (say 13 ft) of the 5th wheel raise when it is attached to the hitch in the box of the truck ?

I always wondered about that, so when my truck was hooked up and I measured mine, it was about 4 or 5 inches than the advertised height.

In the past and now with our present 5th wheel G384RLT we are 13"4', most truck stop clearance's are 15 or 16 feet to fit oversized (height) trucks.....
I like other worry about normal service stations and always check before pulling under such...Just saying that some but not all service stations have height signs place somewhere on the or near the overhead...you may have to look close to find such ..... I know that almost Truck Stops now called travel centers LOL now out front all have enough room to fit any 5th wheel under them without a problem with more than enough room ... I believe the service stations you have to look out for are the mom and pop older stations that were built in the 60es or older

Thanks, yes, I agree that the "travel centre" have adequate clearance but like you, am concerned that regular fuel stations may not have that same clearance. I will definitely be checking before going under too far
