From what i have read, the hitch weight should be 12 to 15% of the gross weight. Gross is 3500 so hitch should be 420 min yet kz says it is 250. Any ideas.

Acceptable hitch or tongue weight, most "experts" agree is between 9% and 15% of gross trailer weight. The 250 lbs is dry hitch weight(unloaded) and it's an average depending on the optional equipment. Just 150 lbs of cargo would put you well within the acceptable range with empty tanks. How the trailer tows also depends a lot on the tow vehicle and how it's loaded.

I agree with 2ndchance. Sounds like the weight as delivered from the factory. After the propane, battery and all the gear stowed below the bed in the pass through is added up that weight will increase substantially.

Not related to this question but can someone explain what the SAE J2807 Towing Standards refer to--I tow with a 1998 S10 V6 2016 Spree Escape 200E
