We were pretty much sold on the GEO method as far as black water tank maintenance goes. But today while reading our Spree Escape Owner's Manual the directions say to put either Drano or Liquid Plumber in the tank. Ummm, that seems pretty harsh to me so I wanted to pose the question here: do we go with the printed directions or add Calgon water softener and Dawn dishwashing liquid (or the Thetford black water tank additive)? What method/products do you all use?

After draining and flushing, we add a cap of laundry detergent and fabric softener, with a septic pod. Never had a problem and the detergent cleans the tank as you drive home .

Check out 1-happycamper.com, I think it's the best for total black tank maintenance and you can use regular toilet paper.
You look like a very happy couple, I wish you long life and Happy Camping!

Hi. Maybe I'm the oddball, but I use the tank flusher and drain it. I don't do anything else to the tank.

Like Johnr we never use anything but water. Used this method for almost 10 years without problems.

My camper is parked. I use the tank flusher, then add a couple of gallons of water, and Happy Camper. I'm sold on Happy Camper.

Has anyone ever had a black water gauge work correctly. I have a flush line and used it and it never shows the tank to be empty.

Mine is never accurate, use a flashlight to confirm the level

I guess I'm the lucky one, my gauges for all three tanks always seems to be accurate. They're usually off right after moving from one area to another, but after a short while, they always seem right.

Happy Camper is the best! We are parked, and also use the tank flusher.

Have had four different 5Th wheels over the years and issues with the gauges have been minimal, mostly after moving. Of course it helps to have a sanitary drain/dump at the house where the unit is parked when not in use, that way you aren't pressed for time when it comes time to clean/dump. I've always used the tank flush (if unit was equipped). Over the course of twenty some years bounding down the road the wife is a fan of "Odorlos" tank treatment after trying numerous brands, what works for us may not work for someone else. Here in So. Calif. it gets plenty hot in the summer and odor can be an issue. Of course it helps to give it a thorough cleaning when you get home. Our Durango 315RKD has an enunciator that lets you know when one of the tanks is getting close to full, it gets ahead of itself sometimes and starts squawking on the black tank at just over half. I think the secret is just to keep them as clean as you can. Happy Camping....
