I have a new Sportsman 280bhss. When the slide is in there is a larger gap between the side of the trailer and the edge of the slide at the bottom compared to the top. The space is equal on both ends of the slide. It is about a one inch gap. Is this normal?

No, it should be flush top & bottom. Normally the top should touch just before the bottom, and then the slide will continue in till it is tight all around. Your slide needs to be adjusted.
There is some chance that the entire trailer is racked, that is not square. With the frame absolutely level, check that the outside walls are plumb with a known good level.

There are adjustments you can make for each slide. If it's under warranty, I'd let your dealer work it out. If out of warranty and you want to do it yourself, your unit manuals should give you instructions on how to adjust the slides.
