We just closed out this year's camping season at Cunningham Falls State Park, Wednesday thru Sunday, in the Catoctin Mountains in central Maryland. We've been to this park many times in the past. It is 45 minutes from home so it's hard to beat the convenience. Plus it's a beautiful park. The sites in our preferred loop (Addison Run) are wooded and relatively private. Electric but no water/sewer at sites, though there are several public water faucets throughout the loop to fill tanks with a hose on your way to your site. Camp hosts are good, friendly folks, the same who've been there for the past few years. They keep an eye on things but are not intrusive, and as long as you don't act up or publicly flaunt it, don't seem to bother with the stupid no-alcohol policy that Maryland state parks implemented ten or so years ago. The public bath house is clean and centrally located in the loop. Sites consist of gravel pads which are flat and very level, so setup is quick and easy. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring with a cooking grate. The loop is also pet-friendly. We had two nice days before it started to rain...almost continuously. So with the help of the couple who we camp with and who occupied the site across the road from us, we set up a 20-ft. canopy over our fire ring and picnic table. The drip line along our camper's awning was manageable thanks to the extra space provided by the canopy.
