Don't know if this is the right place to ask, but: planning to attend the KZ rally for the first time this year, coming from Nebraska, by way of the Quad cities, but I definitely do not want to tow I80 through Chicago, did that once years ago in a car. UGH! so for those of you who go to the rally from the west, would getting off I80 around Joliet and taking US 6 to US 421 to Indiana 2 then US 20 be a workable solution? I have no idea about those roads, so advice greatly appreciated.

In the past I have taken 30 out of Joliet, while 30 does run a bit South, I can accept the additional mileage, mainly because I really want to avoid Chicago. Once in Indiana you can head North on 65 to 20. 30 is a decent road, but there are intermittent signals.

I asked the same question in a personal message to another user on here, he also said take the highway 30 route. We're coming from AZ, but headed up to Denver first - so planned to run I80 to Joliet. We were told 30 is a good highway, but lots of stop and go traveling through small towns. It's a first for us too, we've never been in any of that area before.

The only time we ventured close to Chicago was our first rally. Between the traffic, the ridiculous tolls that allow you to drive on some of the roughest stretches of hwy 80 we said never again. The Indiana toll road isn't all that bad- if you don't mind paying tolls.

I drove truck as a second career and I always went 30 if I could, chuck here also drove and I suspect he would say the something. Downtown Milwaukee is just as bad but I have relatives there and have no choice if I want to visit.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I also posted on another forum, and got a couple responses to avoid 30 because of sketchy neighborhoods (which usually don't bother me), and the many stoplights, side roads, and lower speed limits. I've pretty much decided to take I74 from Quad cities down to US24 then back up once in Indiana. Yes, it is longer, but we don't mind driving 2-lane roads, in fact prefer it.

Want sketchy Lake Station might be worse than Chicago, try Rock Island to Kankakee to Shipshewana.

Yeah, got that, should have said planning to head back north around Logansport Indiana. I don't see much for roads through Kankakee, and on east from there, that why thinking down to 24 and up on Indiana 25 to US 31.
