bubbling decals

Decals on a camper are either a solid color vinyl, or they are printed graphics. Either way, if they are peeling or bubbling, they cannot be repaired and still look good. They need to be removed and replaced. You can strip the decals yourself, but then you might have a very clean new area where the decal was. Any adhesive left behind can be cleaned with paper towel and 70% isopropol alcohol. I agree with the other poster, go to a sign shop and ask for the decals to be redone, but ask for solid color polymeric vinyl. It can last without fading for a long time, but ask the shop for their warranty on vertical surfaces.

It is important to know the manufacturer and type of vinyl decals they will use, it makes a difference in the decal fading after 12 or 18 months, or staying fresh for 5 years or more. Are they using solid colored vinyl, or printed graphics? If they are printed (more important if they are printing a solid color), it needs to have a high performance laminate over the prints. All vinyl decal manufacturers provide a durability rating, short term economy, intermediate, or high performance. You want high performance, which should have a durability rating of 5-10 years for warranty purposes - against fading, cracking, peeling and bubbling. Fading and cracking are usually attributed to the quality of the vinyl, while bubbling and peeling could be installation related. For example, on my Coyote, there is peeling on both sides at the fine pointed edge of the graphic where it meets the silicone caulking at the edge - adhesive does not want to stick to silicone caulk - and why it is failing, this is not the stickers fault, it is installation understanding. My solution will be to trim it back with a razyor to where it has 100% contact away from the silicone and make it look clean again. Ask for the written warranty from the shop.

If you can get all decals replaced with quality material, I would just bite the bullet and get it done. If the quote was for just repair of the current problems, then why bother.

I decided to provide indoor storage before I bought a new trailer. They go downhill real fast if not protected.

The sign shop removed and replaced ALL the decals from the trailer and thought I would post up some pictures. They masked the outline of all the old decals and then used the tape as a guide to hand cut the new ones. They are not perfect but look considerably better than the old ones! As we called the trailer Wile-E I added a couple of custom touches that the Mrs loved when she first saw them! The new lettering is a much more modern font Gold outline with black center) than the original and in my opinion looks much better (KZ you should use this style!) . Now I need to do some polishing to get rid of some ghosting near the lettering and wash the trailer once the decals have a couple of days to set up.

At today's prices $500 sounds like a very fair price even though I think KZ should have made good on the bad decals. My '06 Montego Bay's decals held up very well but my Stoneridge has full body paint so all the graphics are painted on so that is one problem I don't have to worry about any more.

After doing some online searches I decided on some Meguiars marine/RV polish (#50). Found it in the boat section at Canadian Tire. I spent a day and a half with the buffer and wanted to share how great this product worked. Easily removed all oxidation and the couple of minor scuffs that it had. The trailer is now flawless and looks like new!

If you get a basic polisher it's really very easy to do. It's not difficult it just takes time.
