Just bought a 2020 F350 diesel with a 6 3/4 foot bed. Had a 2017 F350 gas with an 8 foot bed. I pull a 2017 Durango 336RET. Please tell me I don’t need a sliding hitch. Not a fan of those. I intend on putting my current hitch in the new truck. I’ve been told I’m good to go. The deal was too good to be true for the new truck. However I haven’t been able to match the truck with the trailer because it is at the dealership getting warranty work done and a few extra tweaks I needed done. Let me hear what you all think. Thanks

Short answer is unless you always maneuver on flat ground, get a slider. When backing the 5th up an incline, the cab- Ft cap distance is reduced... a lot... as the 5th goes up and the truck is on lower ground. I found that out the hard way with my '17 F250 short bed when backing into my RV spot next to the house. FWIW, I went from a '17 F250 to '20 F350 (both 6 3/4 beds & 4X4) and didn't find any height different with hitch height, even though internet lore is the '20's are lower. Congrats on the new truck, that 6.7 is going to impress you.

nvguy- thanks for the input. I’m installing the rails tomorrow. We’ll see what happens when I can finally get to my Durango at the dealership.

I ended up with the new truck for pretty much the same reason-I would have been crazy to say no. Have you got the hitch prep package?

I have a 2017 6-3/4 bed. Slider seems necessary to me.

No OEM puck system with the new truck. Installed it tonight. It was relatively easy. Hardest part was making sure that every steel part that comes in contact with the aluminum has a piece of clear tape attached to it. Apparently, over time the steel corrodes the aluminum. I hooked up to my buddies Jayco and it was perfect. I’ll definitely have more room between the cab and my Durango when hooked up.

FWIW, my '02 D'max 6.5' bed, 4x4, crew cab, would NOT hit my old, square front Komfort FW at full lock, R or L, when going forward. My KZ, with a more rounded nose, has even more clearance when turning, again at full lock R or L. ALL will hit in reverse. IMO, a slider would just give me more time before I =do= hit. And, yes, I have hit my truck, knocking out the back glass, while backing into a spot at a campground. FW was going one way and I was looking the other and the 10-15 people, all family, watching me all just stood there with their thumbs up their a$$e$ and never yelled at me to stop. F'n family of chuckleheads. :-)

I've run several standard box GM and Ford trucks over the years and have NEVER felt the need for a sliding fifth wheel hitch. Currently own a 3500HD standard box with the OEM puck system and pull a 4 season trailer with no problems turning!

Halled too many sheets of plywood, drywall etc.

I agree with you Edd to me Standard is a 8ft bed, 6ft it's called a short bed, like you I have never owned a short bed, hauled to much stuff 8ft long or longer Ugh !
I also wonder about pin weight (1,830 ) with a short bed, but I believe a F350 short handle it, it's just that short turning radius backing up a hill if needed that would bother me Ugh !!!
But they look like really nice trucks an what's not to like about a Ford F350 even if it's a short bed

Chuck and Edd505, all I can say is LOL. The new "standard box" is the 6 1/2' box. Has been advertised as such for years. I'm old school too and was raised with the 8' box as being standard. Don't really know why the 8' box became an option other than the younger crowd couldn't turn their crew cab 8' box trucks around and they couldn't get them in the garage! 😜

When most of us were raised you could only get a shotgun behind the driver as long as it wasn't a double-barrel. Now we have cabs large enough to haul a second family and their dogs. With these large cabs an 8 foot bed truck is like driving a school bus.

lynnmor I have had F350 CC LB dually 4x4's now for many years an I agree you have to have a acre to turn that rig around
But I can still park it in a normal parking space, only problem is I make sure my fenders are past the other vehicles doors are forward of my fenders, they are like targets it seems ...
I have also found out that if I park away from everyone in the north 40 that when I return there is always someone park right next to me so close I have to almost be an acrobat to get back into my truck
Oh Ya an it's always a old junker that should have went to the scrap yard years ago, never one of the B&W's or a new Volvo or Corvette "DRAN THE LUCK". I always want to put a big ding in one of them LOL ....

I wanted to update you all on my original question. I pulled the fifth wheel yesterday for the first time with the new truck (2020 F350 Diesel SW with a 6 3/4 bed). As stated before I put my old hitch in the new truck. No slider. Pulled the trailer from the dealership 80 miles after the warranty work was done. Prior to that the dealership has a huge lot adjacent to it for trial maneuvers with all types of trailers and motor homes. Before I hit the road I replicated, in that lot, every possible scenario I could encounter with a short bed. Reversing uphill, downhill and up to approx 75%. I had more room to go. I was apprehensive at first but the test positively exceeded my expectations. Towed flawlessly down I-91 home. The rounded nose on my Durango definitely was a key to easing my mind. Like I said before, it was deal I couldn’t give up for the new truck. Good to go and thanks for the input and advice. Be safe!!

I used to carry cards saying " Please leave a F***en can opener so I can get in my truck."

I probably had 500 + miles before I made that fateful turn as I was backing up into my yard, cost me a back window.

I used to carry cards saying " Please leave a F***en can opener so I can get in my truck." Back in my younger, and stupider days, I went to a function at a hotel in Tempe. Was driving the wife's '93 Corvette and parked in the garage on an end space, with the passenger side tires almost scrubbing the curb, so well > 2' to the =line= on the driver's side. Went in, socialized, had a couple beers and came back out to find that someone had parked over the line next to me, =maybe= 8" away from the driver's door. No way to get in at all. So, went in the passenger side, barely, climbed over the console, fired the car up, opened my window and let them know how I felt about this with my pocket knife...all down the side of the d-bag's car as I backed out. Only thing I can think of is it was someone who knew me/us, and didn't like me/us. I never heard anything in the 20+ years since, so I guess they must have just chalked it up to "TIFU". Lyle

Sunday I parked to take a hike. There were two ball fields at the trailhead with space for maybe 500 cars, but only one was there. When I came back that one car was gone and one other arrived, can you guess where he parked?
My best one was years ago when I parked at the end of an unoccupied double row. When I returned to the car I noticed the car that backed in front moved a bit when I got in. Got out and found the bumper meshed with mine. I kicked that new Impala so hard he had space for one less suitcase in the trunk. Monday morning at work fellow employee reported that one of his church members had his new car struck in that same parking lot even though he parked way out at the end of a row. I told him that I was there at the same time and some jerk backed into my car, but it wasn’t your guy because you said he didn’t bother anyone.

Far to familiar a story. I park so far away, sometimes I think I walked to the store- and I live 11 miles away from the closest grocery store. And yet, some mook in a beat to death former cop car parks rightnexttome......

Glad you had the success you were hoping for with the new truck! I have had the "new standard" beds, 5.5 ft beds, and 2 long beds. Love the shorter ones for daily drivers, but with the size of my trailer, just felt the long bed was way to go. I went to Florida this last week with the bike rack on the back of my truck. It took a spot and 1/4 to park it, yet multiple times people slid in behind me, leaving them exposed to the traffic in the lane. So, I just became the guy people cuss by taking two spots, albeit far away from the entrance. I have taught myself to always fold my mirrors, can't tell you how many times someone else in a big boy truck will have mirrors out, and you can't open doors or get by. Safe travels. Mask it or casket! Kirt
